VPN: Virtual Private Network Setup Instructions Virtual Private Network (VPN): For e-journals and web-based databases, plus applications like EndNote's Online Search (formerly "Connect") and business systems. UCSD's expanded virtual private network (VPN) service lets you create protected connections to UCSD's network from remote locations. New VPN hardware was installed in May 2008. If you're using the old client, UCSD encourages you to access the VPN using one of the options below. The UCSD VPN creates a virtual private connection over public networks using encryption and other security checks to help protect against computer data transmission interception. It also helps ensure only authorized users can access campus networks. With VPN, network computing traffic between your remote machine (off-campus or wireless) and campus passes over a single, encrypted connection, and your remote machine has a UCSD IP address. Benefits of UCSD's expanded VPN service With EasyConnect, you have secure access to many campus services and remote desktop computing without installing software. Your remote machine appears as though it's physically at UCSD (with a UCSD IP address). Your communications with UCSD are encrypted. This helps protect passwords and reduces the risk of exposing sensitive data.

Installation for UCSD's VPN using the AnyConnect Client: - Windows XP/ Vista/ - Windows 7 - Mac OS X 10.4.x and Above - Windows 8 - GNU/ Linux - iPhone 4.0.x or iPad - iPhone 3.0.x - Android 4x

Configuring the UCSD VPN Client for Windows XP/ Vista/ Windows 7 Download and configure the UCSD Virtual Private Network (VPN) AnyConnect client on your Windows XP/ Vista/ Windows 7 machine via the new Web interface. You must use either Internet Explorer or Firefox - this will not work with Chrome. Notes: You must log in to your computer with administrator rights. You need your Active Directory (AD) username and password. If you don’t remember your AD username or password, you can either reset it at https://adweb.ucsd.edu/adpass/ or contact your department's systems administrator. You must have Java Runtime Environment or an equivalent browser plug-in. If you don't, see step 1. If you do, start at step 2.

1. Use Firefox to set up Java Runtime Environment. Skip to step 2 if you have Java. Start Firefox (not Internet Explorer), and go to Firefox Add-ons: Common Plugins for Firefox. Scroll down, and select Java. Click Download Now, Free Java Download, and Download now. Then click Save and download it to your desktop. Double-click jxpinstall to execute. Accept the license, and click Finish to complete the process.

2. Use Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) to add the VPN to your trusted sites. Using IE7 (not Firefox), choose Tools then Internet Options. Click the Security tab. Click the Trusted Sites icon, then click Sites. Enter https://vpn.ucsd.edu to the list of known Web sites in the Trusted Sites window, then clickAdd. Click Close. Click OK on the Security tab window.

3. Install the UCSD VPN AnyConnect client. Go to the VPN Sign-On page: https://vpn.ucsd.edu. Enter your AD username and password. Select your desired connection profile from the Group drop-down menu: split – Route only campus traffic through the UCSD VPN. All other traffic goes through your normal Internet provider. allthruucsd – Route all traffic through the UCSD VPN. Click Sign On.

4. Begin the installation. On the next screen, click Start AnyConnect to begin the installation. Vista users: If you see the Vista User Account Control pop-up window, select Allow.

5. Install ActiveX Control, if prompted. Click This site might require the following ActiveX control: on the information bar near the top of the browser window, if prompted to install ActiveX Control.

Finish the installation by clicking Install, if prompted.

6. Connect to the UCSD VPN automatically. After the installation completes, your computer connects to the VPN automatically. This may take several seconds. When the screen below appears, you've successfully connected to the UCSD VPN using the Cisco AnyConnect Client. If your computer does not automatically connect to the VPN, see steps 8-13 to connect manually.

7. Disconnect from the UCSD VPN. To disconnect, either: Right-click the VPN icon in the System tray, and select Disconnect.

or Double-click the VPN icon, click the Connection tab, and then click Disconnect.

8. Connect to the VPN manually if automatic connection doesn't work. Click the Windows Vista/64/XP/2000 link in the window and download the client to your desktop.

9. Begin the new installation. Double-click the AnyConnect icon on your desktop to start the installation.

10. Accept the license agreement. Accept the terms, and click Next.

11. Continue the installation. Click Install.

12. Finish the installation. Click Finish.

13. Sign on again. Go back to the VPN Sign-On page, and sign on again. Remember to select split or allthruucsd from the Group drop-down menu. Use allthruucsd when accessing Library resources Click Start AnyConnect. When the screen below appears, you've successfully connected to the UCSD VPN using the Cisco AnyConnect Client. This may take several seconds. To disconnect, see step 7.

3. Begin the installation. On the next screen, click Start AnyConnect to begin the installation.

3. Continue the installation. The VPN Client Downloader screen appears. If the automatic installation fails, see steps 6-10 to connect manually.

4. Finish the installation. After the installation completes and connects to the VPN, the Connection Established screen appears. You're now connected to the UCSD VPN using the Cisco AnyConnect client.

5. Disconnect from the UCSD VPN. To disconnect, either: Click the VPN icon in the menubar, and select Disconnect.

6. Install manually if the automatic installation doesn't work. To install manually, click the Mac OS X 10.4+ (power pc) link.

7. Save the vpnsetup.sh file to your desktop. Click Save File to save to your desktop.

8. Open a Terminal window. Open the Utilities folder in the Applications directory and double-click Terminal.

9. Run the manual installation script. Go to the directory where the installation script downloaded. In this case type cd Desktop and pressreturn. Type sudo sh vpnsetup.sh and press return to execute the installation script. If prompted, enter your computer's administrator (system login) password.

10. Sign on again. Go to the VPN Sign-On page: https://vpn.ucsd.edu. Sign on with your AD username and password and select split or allthruucsd from the Group drop-down menu. Use allthruucsd when accessing Library resources Click Start AnyConnect. When the screen below appears, you've successfully connected to the UCSD VPN using the Cisco AnyConnect client. This may take several seconds. To disconnect, see step 5.

Configuring iPhone/iPad 3.x to Access the UCSD Virtual Private Network (VPN) Follow these steps to connect your iPhone/iPad to the UCSD virtual private network (VPN), which lets you create protected connections to UCSD's network from remote locations. Before you begin, you must have: An iPhone/iPad with version 3.0 firmware or later installed, or an iPad Your UCSD Active Directory username and password Your username is usually the first part of your UCSD e-mail address before the @ symbol. If you forget your password, see Getting or Changing UCSD Passwords.

1. Download iPhone/iPad VPN configuration profile. Using your iPhone or iPad, download the VPN configuration profile. Log in using Single Sign-On with one of the 4 methods noted at the top of the screen.

2. Install the profile. Select Install. Select Install Now on the following screen. If prompted, enter your iPhone/iPad security code (i.e., passcode).

3. Enter VPN authentication. Enter your UCSD Active Directory username and password.

4. Connect to the VPN. Select Settings. Slide the VPN switch to the ON position.

5. Disconnect VPN. Select Settings. Slide the VPN switch to the OFF position.

Configuring Android 4.x to Access the UCSD Virtual Private Network (VPN) Follow these steps to connect your Android 4.x to the UCSD virtual private network (VPN), which lets you create protected connections to UCSD's network from remote locations. Before you begin, you must have: An Android phone with version 4.x firmware or later installed Your UCSD Active Directory username and password Your Active Directory username is usually the first part of your UCSD e-mail address before the @ symbol. If you forget your password, see Getting or Changing UCSD Passwords.

1. Download Cisco VPN AnyConnect ICS+. Using your Android phone, download the AnyConnect client in the Google Play store. Search "AnyConnect ICS+.

2. Install the App. Click Download and install the app. When finished downloading click Accept & Download.

3. Enter VPN Connection. Choose Add New VPN Connection. Description: UCSD. Server Address: vpn.ucsd.edu. Certificate Automatic. Click Done.

4. Enter your AD username and password. Select the group Easyconnect, Allthruucsd or Split. Enter your Active Directory (AD) username and password.

5. Finish Connection. Select I trust this application. Select OK.
