About R&D Recruit Strategic Partners (RSP) Recruit Strategic Partners (RSP) invests in firms throughout Japan and around the world. The focus of these investments are firms that have a close affinity to Recruit’s existing business areas and that have the potential to disrupt and transform existing industries through technology and support such as P2P, business support, funding, training, and technological infrastructure. As part of this effort, RSP partnered with Udacity, an online education service that focuses specifically on technology-related courses, in 2014 and has invested in design marketplace 99designs and crowdsourcing translation platform Gengo in 2015. Going forward, RSP will promote the development and widespread use of the sharing economy, data sciences, and advanced technologies that are expected to grow on a global scale.

Media Technology Lab. (MTL) Media Technology Lab (MTL) is an organization that operates the in-house new business proposal program called Recruit Ventures while also providing business incubation support to successful proposals. This year, MTL is developing a framework that supports business creation and commercialization through efforts such as the implementation of an in-house business investment management process that is modeled after the stage-gate investment approach, the introduction of renowned mentors, and the launch of Recruit Ventures College.

Recruit Institute of Technology (RIT) Re-launched in April 2015, Recruit Institute of Technology (RIT) is responsible for the research and development of new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and sensors. With the participation of U.S. Carnegie Mellon University Professor Tom M. Mitchell and other world-renowned AI authorities, RIT is researching and promoting global AI and sensing technologies in collaboration with Recruit Group companies that focus on providing HR and marketing media services in Japan and around the world.

Staffing business In 2010, the Recruit Group acquired U.S.-based CSI, marking our entry into the international staffing market. We subsequently expanded our operations in North America, Europe, and Oceania with the acquisition of Staffmark and Advantage Resourcing in 2011 and the acquisition of Peoplebank in 2015.

Recruitment services In 2009, we expanded our RGF global brand across China. In 2013, we acquired full ownership of Bó Lè Associates a leading executive search firm in Asia. As of April 2015, we have expanded our operations to 28 cities and 11 countries/markets in Asia, including Japan. In 2010, we launched our “WORK IN JAPAN” service to help bring together students who will soon be graduating from the top Asian universities with Japanese companies that are looking for new talent. (This service is currently operated by Recruit Career.)

Online HR services In 2006, we invested in a business partnership with 51job, a provider of online HR services in China. In 2012, we acquired full ownership of Indeed, a fast-growing provider of online HR services with a strong presence in the U.S. and Europe.

Marketing media business As part of our marketing media business efforts, we have launched a number of joint ventures with local companies, including: PT.GO Online Destinations – operator of PegiPegi.com, a hotel booking site in Indonesia, Travel Book Philippines – operator of Travel Book.ph, a hotel booking site in the Philippines, and Mytour Vietnam company – operator of Mytour.vn, a hotel booking site in Vietnam. Recruit acquired full ownership of Travel Book Philippines in 2015. In addition to these joint venture businesses, we acquired full ownership of: Movoto – operator of Movoto, an online pre-owned real estate service in the U.S. in 2013, and Quandoo – operator of a restaurant booking site in Europe in 2015. ©

From our inaugural issue of FromA magazine in 1982, we further influenced the way the public thinks of part-time work by presenting these jobs as a lifestyle choice. Since then, we have continued to develop new services that match jobseekers with employers across Japan. For example, our TOWNWORK magazine is currently distributed in 90 regional editions across Japan as of June 2015 to provide a media channel that helps bring together people with companies

Programs and systems that support our unique Recruit culture New RING Program for encouraging employees to submit proposals for new business undertakings New RING is a general term used to describe the various contests for new business projects that are held within the Recruit Group. First started in 1983 under the name RING (Recruit Innovation Group) and renamed to New RING in 1990, this program is held every year and has helped to produce many new businesses, including Zexy, TOWNWORK, Hot Pepper, R25, and Jyuken Sapuri. Diversity At the Recruit Group, one of our Management Philosophies is respect for all individuals, which signifies the importance of enabling employees to reach their full potential regardless of gender. We at the Recruit Group have been promoting diversity since 2006 with the aim of encouraging the active participation of female employees. Our efforts began by addressing the issue of long working hours. In 2007, we further established an on-site day-care center within our corporate headquarters building. These and other initiatives focusing on work-life balance have been implemented to develop an environment that allows employees to work with stability. In 2010, we expanded our focus to include initiatives that promote the participation of women in management and corporate decision-making positions. With the change of our governance structure in October 2012, we have been creating a culture that promotes diversity in the Recruit Group workplace.

Our target for women in corporate decision-making positions In 2012, we set a numerical target to increase the percentage of women in corporate decision-making (as Executive Officers or positions with comparable authority) throughout key Recruit Group companies in Japan to 10% or more by April 2015. In October 2012, women held only 5 of these positions, accounting for 5.3% of the total. As of April 2015, 17 of these positions, or 13.2%, are held by women, successfully meeting our numerical target. Our new mid- to long-term numerical target from 2015 is for women to represent at least 30% of manager positions throughout key Recruit Group companies in Japan by April 2018.

The Recruit Group has made use of the experience gained through our business activities to develop a program that supports young people searching for work. Offered free-ofcharge since 2011 in cooperation with 54 universities and 52 NPOs, the program is held across Japan and recorded 4,173 participants in fiscal 2014. Of the total of 15,000 young jobseekers who participated since 2011, more than 60% received a job offer within 3 months after participation.

TOWNWORK TRY! WORK is a work experience program in which Recruit Group employees visit Japanese junior high schools to give presentations on discovering and communicating the satisfaction found in working. A total of 282 employees have given presentations to 10,563 junior high schools over 9 years, including 39 employees who gave presentations to 1,631 students at 11 junior high schools in fiscal 2014.

Creation Gallery G8 and Guardian Garden

Recruit operates two galleries in the Ginza area of Tokyo: Creation Gallery G8 and Guardian Garden, which have been in operation for 31 years and 25 years respectively. Creation Gallery G8 is located on the first floor of Recruit’s registered headquarters in the Ginza 8-chome area and mainly showcases the works of top designers under the theme of richer lives through design. The Guardian Garden is located on the basement level of a building in the Ginza 7-chome area and has supported the creative activities of many young artists by holding competitions to discover and foster young talent. As an annual event, a charity exhibition is held at the end of each year. In fiscal 2014, the exhibition featured Japanese-style bound journals that were designed by 187 designers and created by people with disabilities in the Tohoku region. Proceeds are donated to the Japanese prefectures that were affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The Ezoe Memorial Foundation is a Japanese public interest incorporated foundation that was established in 1971 to support individuals with leadership potential, individuals with the desire to learn, and other individuals with future potential. The idea for the foundation originated after exploring ways to contribute to society in the tenth year since the founding of Recruit. Since then, the foundation has awarded scholarships to 562 individuals, many of whom have developed to become active participants in their respective fields. In recent years, support is being offered to young individuals who are involved in music, arts, and sports around the world. In fiscal 2014, the foundation awarded scholarships to 18 individuals and grants to 3 businesses.

In Japan, housing information includes information on the amount of time required to walk to the relevant home from the nearest train station. Previously, the seller was able to create advertisements without restrictions. For this reason, the rules and standards used were inconsistent and resulted in housing information that would indicate a walk time that was much shorter than the actual time required. To address this problem, our “JUTAKU JOHO” magazine adopted a standard measure for walking distance, in which 80 meters is calculated as 1 minute. “JUTAKU JOHO” was also the magazine that developed the floor plan drawings that are commonplace in real estate listings today.

In this connection, we launched a wide variety of services that developed our magazine content while also taking advantage of internet functions. For example, we offered a service that delivered the relevant information to potential condominium buyers after they registered their preferences such as desired budget, location, and room dimensions. From the early days of the internet when use was confined to only a limited few, our “Mix-Juice” service experimented with a variety of ideas.
