A Year of Change and Opportunity Every day, patients at the University of Alberta Hospital and the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute benefit from the most innovative patient care programs, advanced technology and leading-edge research available in Canada, and in many cases the world. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we extend a heartfelt thanks to our many donors and supporters who, through their contributions, help to support the highest level of excellence in patient care and research. In the 2008-09 fiscal year, the Foundation raised over $10.3 million (net) and distributed over $7 million to support vital priorities at the University of Alberta Hospital and the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. We thank Committee Chair, Phil Lachambre and all the members of the Finance and Investment Committee  who have worked diligently to ensure that donor dollars are managed with utmost responsibility. Although we have not been immune to the economic downturn, we are pleased to report that our investment managers have limited our investment loss to -12.9% for this fiscal year. When combined with our cash holdings, our loss for the year is -9.9%. We are fortunate to have sufficient capital in our unrestricted fund to absorb all the losses in our investment portfolio. As a result, the investment losses did not impact the capital of our Established (Endowed Funds) Funds. We invite you to review our financial statements beginning on page 21. This year, the Foundation developed a three-year strategic plan that looks beyond the current challenges in both health care and the economy, to the future growth of the Foundation. This process resulted in a new mission, vision and seven strategic priorities to guide the Board, staff and volunteers in moving forward – solidly and confidently. UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2008 / 2009

Trauma – When Minutes Matter Donors Support Life-Saving Care Every year, the trauma team at the University of Alberta Hospital cares for thousands of seriously injured patients whose lives – in a split second – have changed. As a Level 1 trauma centre, the University Hospital receives patients with critical and often life-threatening injuries from Edmonton and central Alberta as well as northern and western Canada. Specialized equipment plays a major role in helping our skilled trauma team save lives and reduce the lifelong impact of serious injuries. This year, through the generous donor support of our Annual Campaign, the Festival of Trees and

the Full House Lottery, the University Hospital Foundation raised $2 million in support of Trauma Services. These funds will be used to purchase a portable FAST ultrasound and other emergency trauma equipment to provide immediate assessment and treatment for the most urgent aspects of care. Funds are also being directed to support state-of-the-art surgical equipment as well as a continuous monitoring system and other technology for the Inpatient Trauma Unit, ensuring patients have access to life-saving equipment – when minutes matter.

Below: The highly skilled trauma team at the University Hospital is a leader in continually advancing specialized skills and knowledge.

“With trauma – time is key! When caring for trauma patients, staff are dealing with critical conditions. I am deeply touched by the generosity of the many donors who give significantly to our hospital. Their support is absolutely critical to ensuring that we have the highly specialized equipment in place when we need it.” dr . mary van wijngaarden - stephens director trauma services university of alberta hospital

UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2008 / 2009

“The FAST ultrasound is really a superb tool in our ability to provide state-ofthe-art assessment for trauma and emergency patients at the University Hospital. It allows us to quickly determine the presence of life-threatening injuries and prioritize their care. I want to express a very sincere ‘thank you’ to those who have worked so hard – the donors, the volunteers and the staff from the Foundation – to support us in providing the best trauma care possible.” dr . brian holroyd chief of service emergency university of alberta hospital

It’s a Miracle I’m Alive… On July 19, 2007, Andy Lopushinsky was enjoying an evening motorcycle ride when a deer darted into his path and the two collided. In a split second, Andy’s life changed dramatically. His motorcycle repeatedly rolled and he sustained massive, life-threatening injuries. He had multiple back fractures, his limbs were shattered and crushed and his muscles were severely torn and damaged.

Andy was transported to the Level 1 trauma centre at the University Hospital where the trauma team was on alert and ready. “It was terrifying. We just didn’t know what to expect,” says Andy’s wife, Donna. Andy was rushed to the operating room where the surgical team performed the first of multiple surgeries to repair his body. He was then transferred to the Trauma Unit where he began the long journey to recovery. “It’s a miracle I’m alive. What the doctors and nurses at the University Hospital did for me is absolutely amazing. They are like family to me.” And family is what really matters to Andy Lopushinsky. “I’m so grateful to be able to enjoy all the little things – watching my kids’ baseball games and sports and hearing them run up the driveway after school. It means the world to me.” “My family and I are so grateful to the amazing staff who cared for me and to the many donors who contribute to advance the trauma program here. I can’t imagine what it would’ve been like if this had happened anywhere else.” andy lopushinsky

The Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute Opens its Heart to the World The new Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute is part of a regional, provincial and national cardiac network bringing together the best talent, resources and passion to address all aspects of heart disease – from prevention to treatment and recovery. We thank our many donors who supported the vision of this remarkable facility by contributing over

$48 million to help move Canada’s newest heart institute from a dream to a reality.  Adult and pediatric patients from Alberta as well as western and northern Canada are now benefiting from the highest level of patient-centered care, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment technology, and leading-edge research at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.

Vision

“This building was designed with the patient in mind – every feature, from the technology, to the way we coordinate the many patient services and areas of care. It really is a world-class facility, and we are very happy that patients will benefit from this.” dr . arvind koshal director of development and external affairs mazankowski alberta heart institute

UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2008 / 2009

Many design elements in the heart institute enhance the healing and working environment. Patients have more privacy, quieter rooms and large windows with natural light to promote healing and recovery. Greater space allows more technology at the bedside. Improved call systems, room-side nursing stations and interactive bedside terminals help staff provide more effective care. “For the first time in my life, I have felt a lot of hope. I really think it comes from this environment.” david mctavish

“The heart institute is dedicated to patient-centred care. Without donor support, we wouldn’t have some of the new technology and the important extras that we have to help us provide the very best care. Areas such as the family waiting rooms and the Guru Nanak Dev Healing Garden play an important role in supporting patients and their families during care and recovery.” carol manson - mcleod director mazankowski alberta heart institute

UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2008 / 2009

The new heart institute is taking the lead in providing a stronger chain of linked cardiac care. All clinical and diagnostic services are conveniently located within a short distance on one floor and are accessed through a central waiting area. This promotes greater team work and easier consultation among staff and provides patients with streamlined access to the many specialized services and clinics. “The new heart institute lifts the spirit. It’s full of amazing people who are genuinely caring. It makes such a difference.” judy korschow

The Prostate Health Clinic One in seven men will receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer in his lifetime. This year alone, an estimated 24,700 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 4,300 will die of this disease. Early diagnosis and rapid access to treatment significantly increase survival rates. The Campaign for Prostate Health is supporting the creation of a new Prostate Health Clinic, to be centrally located in Edmonton. As part of a consolidated urology centre, this clinic will help men from central

and northern Alberta navigate rapidly and seamlessly through a range of diagnostic and treatment outpatient services. The new facility will support a team-based approach to integrated, patient-centered care and will create a synergy of medical education and research for the only urology resident training program in Alberta. Patients will benefit from a multi-disciplinary team of experts working in partnership to provide education, treatment and support – from screening and diagnosis to recovery.

Donor Gifts: Saving and Improving Lives A Legacy of Hope Al Owen is widely respected as a visionary and a successful business man with a long history of community support. Much of that support has significantly helped to advance patient care and research at the University of Alberta Hospital. Al’s leadership gift of $2.5 million a decade ago has led to tremendous progress in life-saving research and new treatments to reduce the disabling effects of stroke for patients and their families. This gift was instrumental in the development of the Allan H. Owen and Family Stroke Prevention Clinic, as well as the Allan H. Owen and Family Stroke Observation Unit. Funds were also used to create an endowed fund which continues to support the Stroke Program.

In addition, this donation provided seed funding to leverage many millions of dollars that supported the development of the Peter S. Allen MR Research Centre. This world-class facility is pivotal in attracting the brightest and the best researchers and advancing our understanding and treatment of neurological disorders. Much of this research is made possible by the 4.7 Tesla Magnet that enables clinicians to see deep brain structures that they are unable to see with other magnetic imaging technology. On June 12th, 2009, the University Hospital Foundation was pleased to recognize Al Owen’s outstanding contribution through the naming of the 4.7 Tesla Magnet in his honour.

Above: Al Owen and his daughter, Donna Owen, at the dedication and naming event for the Allan H. Owen and Family 4.7 T MR Research Spectrometer.

“The 4.7 Tesla Magnet has a huge magnetic field. As someone said, it’s like the Hubble telescope of MRIs. It helps us push the vision further in order to make diagnoses more insightful. We are seeing with new eyes. We can see things we haven’t seen before. New information. New answers, which can lead to better diagnosis and treatment.” dr . peter s . allen

A Legacy of Care Sandra Sprague was deeply touched by the care and compassion her mother received at the University of Alberta Hospital. She and her family translated their gratitude into a generous donation to advance gastroenterology services at the hospital. “I am so pleased to be able to make this gift in memory of my mother, Mary Macleod, as a tribute to the excellent care she received from Dr. Fedorak and the gastroenterology team,” said Sandra. This thoughtful gift was used to leverage funds to purchase two, highly sophisticated Video Capsule Endoscopy Systems – leading-edge technology used to view the small intestine and assist in determining the location and cause of abnormal conditions.

The remaining portion of the donation helped support specialized training in this leading-edge technology – for this and future generations of gastroenterology professionals. With video capsule endoscopy, the patient swallows a small capsule that houses a miniature camera that takes over 55,000 high definition images of the small intestine to help diagnose tumours, polyps, ulcers and disease conditions. “Prior to this, no technology existed to view this area of the digestive system,” says Dr. Fedorak. “Accurately diagnosing the location of ulcers or intestinal bleeds was difficult; even impossible – often requiring the patient to undergo numerous blood transfusions.” This new technology helps determine the best course of treatment.

Above: Don Cranston, Don & Sandra Sprague, Ken Sprague, Sherrill Ginther, Dr. Richard Fedorak and Children: Kyle & Jenna Ginther at the naming of the Macleod-Sprague Family Video Capsule Endoscopy Unit on August 31, 2009.

“The support we have received from Sandra Sprague and her family is helping to ensure that our patients benefit from the latest high-definition video capsule endoscopy. This will contribute greatly in helping us diagnose and treat patients with complex gastrointestinal disorders.” dr . richard fedorak professor of medicine division of gastroenterology

Medical Research: Exploring New Therapies Medical research is driven by vision and hope and is the foundation of discovery. We thank our many donors who, through their support for research, are helping to ensure that patients benefit from new knowledge and treatments that will help save lives and reduce the impact of illness.

This past year, donor gifts enabled the Foundation to fund over $1.5 million in research through the Medical Research Competition, Team Research Grants and Endowed Funds to help launch and sustain promising research projects covering a broad spectrum of iniatives.

A Diverse Team – A Common Goal One in 100 Albertans will develop schizophrenia in their lifetime. This illness often strikes young people in the prime of their lives – impacting their ability to work, study, raise their families or even live independently. Under the leadership of Dr. Scot Purdon, a multidisciplinary team of professionals has come together in a three-part study funded by the Foundation’s Team Research Grant to look for answers to this puzzling and often devastating illness. The project examines the

pathways a person takes while seeking appropriate care during their first episode of psychosis. It is also implementing and documenting a school-based education program to increase awareness and reduce stigma. In addition, researchers are examining the biological and psychological markers of the disease. This research is vital to determining the cause of schizophrenia and ensuring accurate assessment and treatment is provided as soon as possible, reducing the personal, social and financial impacts of this illness.

Project lead, Dr. Scot Purdon (centre left) and Co-lead, Dr. Cam Wild (centre right) with members of their multi-disciplinary team from the Bebensee Schizophrenia Research Unit (BSRU) of the Department of Psychiatry. Areas represented:

“There is a synergy on this project that is truly remarkable, and we would not be able to come together to share our combined expertise without the generous support of the University Hospital Foundation donors and the Team Research Grant.”

A Gift for the Future As President of Capital Packers, Brent Komarnicki wanted to give back to the community that has been such a large part of his business and family. Brent and his father determined that their family’s wish would be well-served by creating the Capital Packers Inc./Komarnicki Family Established Fund to provide a vital source of funding for important priorities as they emerge at the University Hospital. “It seems to be the pinnacle – the place where medicine and science come together. And we are all reaping the benefits,” says Brent.

Brent & Tilly Komarnicki 26

“The University Hospital has been the site of many significant medical breakthroughs in both patient care and research, and we wanted to contribute to a cause that had an impact – not just locally, but nationally and internationally.” brent komarnicki

A Gift from the Heart

Melissa & Emily Hickle with parents, Darlene & Stephen

Emily and Melissa Hickle know the greatest gifts of all are those that come from the heart. Rather than accepting presents on their birthdays, the two sisters, chose to use their special days to honour their aunt, Brenda Moffitt. Brenda was a cardiac operating room nurse at the University Hospital for over 30 years. She knew first-hand the many benefits the new heart institute would provide to patients. Sadly, on May 2, 2008, Brenda passed away and never had the opportunity to work in the new facility. To honour her passion to continually raise the bar in nursing excellence, Brenda’s father, Harold Moffit, created the Brenda Moffit Memorial Fund in Support of Nursing Education. “It felt good to raise money for Aunty Bren’s fund, because we knew we were making a difference and helping. It’s not always about getting presents on your birthday. It’s also about giving.” emily & melissa hickle
