Healthy Living Newsletter June 2015

Take your health to a new level. 3M can help!

Employee spotlight Wellness screening results surprise health enthusiast To many of her coworkers, Tracinda Yaw, was the picture of good health. Over the course of her 19-year career with 3M, she had consistently participated in 3M Healthy Living and done her best to stay active. Her BMI was low, she ate healthy and her only real vice was a Dr. Pepper or two throughout the day. When it came time for her health screening last year, Tracinda’s numbers told a different story. “The blood draw kicked me into action,” said Tracinda, master black belt at the Industrial Adhesives and Tapes Division, in St. Paul, Minn. “My cholesterol was 210—my highest reading ever!” An engineer by education, wellness screening data made it clear that it was time for Tracinda to make some changes. Over her lunch breaks, she began using the onsite fitness center, which was very convenient and affordable. Tracinda then added a Fitbit® to her health routine so she could track her steps. Her children liked checking her progress when she got home from work – and she liked making it a family event. A former plant manager at the Industrial Adhesives and Tapes Division in Knoxville, Iowa, Tracinda was already getting at least 9,000 steps a day at the plant. When she started tracking it motivated her to push for 15,000 steps a day! “I want to be able to keep up with my children now while they’re little and as they get older,” Tracinda said. “This last health screening was enough to motivate me to make a life change.” Plant employees noticed the difference, too—especially the missing Dr. Pepper cans. When Tracinda replaced soda with hot tea, she started conversations about the many 3M Healthy Living resources available. She’s been working hard at her lifestyle changes over the past 15 months. Featured news Are you paying too much for health care? Register today and use Castlight Health™ Did you know that prices for the same medical services can differ by hundreds of dollars depending on the provider? For example, out-of-pocket costs for a standard office visit can range anywhere from $80 to $250. For other types of visits, lab tests and x-rays, the range can be even larger! Fortunately, you can often find exactly the same service for a lower price without any difference in the quality of care. That’s why 3M partnered with Castlight Health™ earlier this year to launch a personalized health care shopping tool that puts you in control of your health care. With Castlight, not only can you find a high-quality doctor at an affordable price before you make an appointment, you can also review past medical spending, search for medical services and see personalized cost estimates based on your 3M Medical Plan.

Register and use the Castlight website! If you have not yet registered, sign up today. If you’ve already registered, be sure to take advantage of this valuable tool. You can register online or by calling a Castlight Guide at (800) 681-6759 (toll free). Featured news Recharging to avoid burnout Stress levels are soaring these days. Ask most people, and they’ll tell you they feel it at work, at home and in their personal lives, too. They’re constantly trying to juggle all the pressures.

Take stress seriously If stress goes on too long, it can lead to burnout. That’s when you feel like you’ve “hit a wall.” When you’re burned out, you feel numb and exhausted. You can lose your motivation and enthusiasm. Burnout can affect your work performance, your home life and even your health.

Steps to prevent burnout Getting burned out? Take time to recharge your personal energy sources that keep you going. Here are some tips for recharging:

These steps can help renew your spirit

It may sound hard to take new actions when you’re feeling low on energy and interest. But you need to push yourself in order to fight burnout.

Disconnect. Today’s technologies allow us to feel “connected” all the time. Always plugged in to our smart phones, tablets, PCs and other devices, we rarely get a break from texts, emails, phone calls and information alerts. But everyone needs some time off. So, consider turning off all your devices for a part of each day. Or create a space in your home where no devices are allowed. For example, make your bedroom a “device-free” zone. When you go into that room, tune out for a much needed break. The texts, voicemails and news will all be waiting for you when you plug in again.

Expand your interests. Feel like you do the same things day in and day out? Take on some new activities and challenges. Try a new hobby. Take a class or volunteer for a good cause. Changing your everyday routine can help you see things in a new way. Pay attention to your own basic needs. You can’t feel good if you don’t take care of yourself. Healthy diet, sleep and exercise regimes help keep stress under control and help improve your outlook and mood. Are you thinking you have no time to take care of yourself? Think again. You need to make time for you. Create new routines that give you slots of time to work out, eat healthy meals and snacks, and get six to eight hours of sleep each night. There’s no way to fool your body long-term: If you ignore your basic needs now, you could pay the price with unwelcome health issues.

Get a start on rebuilding your energy, interest and motivation today. If you continue to feel stressed or depressed for more than a few weeks, seek professional help. (Source: Work & Family Benefits, Inc.)

Fitness fact Exercise while traveling While traveling isn’t an ideal time to begin a new exercise program, the goal should be to maintain your current fitness level. Here are some modifications you might need to consider while traveling. • Consider exercise availability when choosing lodging. Some hotels offer swimming pools, weight training equipment and cardiovascular equipment. If exercise equipment is not available, ask hotel personnel for safe walking routes. You may also consider packing a jump rope or a resistance band. The 3M Fitness Center staff is also available to assist you with planning a bodyweight workout to take with you while traveling. • Plan your trip schedule to include time for exercise. Business trips are often filled with time-crunched schedules and meetings that leave little extra time. However, exercise may help you concentrate better and give you energy to be more productive. • It is important to understand that it is much easier to maintain your current fitness level than improve. Current evidence suggests that you should be able to maintain your fitness level with a regimen of aerobic or strength training twice a week.
