Annual Report 2011

Our Mission

Parks & People Foundation is dedicated to supporting a wide range of recreational and educational opportunities; creating and sustaining beautiful and lively parks; and promoting a healthy, natural e nvironment for Baltimore.

Dear Friends, We have all seen those lists of “best cities.” Some list the best places to live, or to work, but one thing these lists have in common: natural beauty and recreation are essential to making a city “great.” Great cities provide the opportunity for kids to gain confidence on little league teams and feel triumphant when they learn to swim or sail for the first time at summer camp. Great cities have vibrant parks where families ride bikes and play ball, hear birds chirp and frogs croak. Great cities teach teens to work and get paid for their efforts in summer jobs. Great cities bring neighbors together to tackle community clean-ups and neighborhood beautification. But perhaps most importantly, great cities make us all feel like we can make a difference. At Parks & People we care passionately about making Baltimore City the best it can be. We work every day to make sure that Baltimore has the best – trees, parks, trails, waterways, sports, summer camps, environmental education and after-school programs. That’s what we do, because for life to be great in Baltimore, we must have healthy, active neighborhoods with vibrant recreation and parks. In this report of our work during 2011, you will discover not only the amazing things Parks & People does as an organization, but the many lives we make better each and every day by doing them. Thank you for all you do to help make Baltimore great.

activities. SuperKids uses enrichment activities to reinforce literacy, teach students new vocabulary and keep them learning outside of the classroom. This year’s enrichment

activities included programming from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Downtown Sailing Center, Center Stage, Historic Ships of Baltimore, the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, Parks & People’s Project BLUE and much more. This integrated approach is designed to complement Baltimore City Schools’ curriculum and helps to improve SuperKids campers’ attitudes toward learning. 2 • Parks & People Foundation

Volunteers

V

olunteers are truly the lifeblood of Parks & People. Not only do we rely on volunteers to help us complete our essential work, we

also teach others to volunteer, organize and advocate. Our hope is that a few hours of volunteer work planting trees, weeding a garden, helping teach children to read or coaching soccer with Parks & People will inspire a lifetime commitment to building community and stewardship. Thank you to everyone who gave of their time in 2011. We hope to see you again in 2012! Parks & People Foundation • 9

been supporting innovative park projects since 2005. In 2011, Partnerships for Parks awarded 16 grants totaling $59,599 to community groups to implement dozens of projects including trail maintenance, “paddle and scoop” river clean ups, trash and invasive plant removal, tree planting and care, mural painting and more. All combined, these efforts represented 4,386 volunteer hours donated to the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks, for a value of $97,895.

T

here is no doubt, Parks & People works hard! But, we also like to have fun and celebrate the great accomplishments of our friends and partners. We work to get the

word out about the important work we do, encouraging stewardship through community outreach.

Picnic in the Park In September 2011, we held our first “Picnic in the Park” and welcomed over 200 guests for a chic picnic dinner and great company under the tent at the Howard P. Rawlings Conservatory in Druid Hill Park. Just a month later, our Friends group held “Can You Dig It?” in Fells Point welcoming over 100 guests with great food, drinks and music. Our reception and benefit performance of Cirque du Soleil’s “Totem” was also a huge hit. All of these great events provided a new avenue for guests to get to know Parks & People. Many thanks to all who attended. Hope to see you next year!

only is it a great party, but it is also a wonderful opportunity for green-minded people to come together, share ideas and celebrate their accomplishments. Over 200 guests joined us for the 2011 celebration – our 16th annual. Sponsors included: Constellation Energy, the TKF Foundation, the Baltimore Community Foundation, and the Baltimore Ecosystem Study. REI presented a 2012 grant award to Parks & People at the event.

Great Parks, Clean Streams & Green Communities

The Abell Foundation Alliance for Community Trees Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay American Communities Trust Inc.

Druid Hill Park at Auchentoroly Terrace

D

ruid Hill Park at Auchentoroly Terrace will be a hub for all of Parks & People’s education, youth development, recreation, greening

and workforce development programs as well as a park resource for the surrounding community. Our plan to rehabilitate the historic Superintendent’s House, construct a new education and ecology center and restore the landscape with gardens and a nature play space is becoming a reality. To begin the process, our landscape teams have removed invasives and begun to maintain the park. The final building plans will ensure that the entire project is certified LEED Platinum – the highest level of environmentally sensitive design and construction possible.
