Submitting Assignments Upon Enrollment 

Check and update your e-mail address on the Blackboard site. Using your TROY e-mail address is a requirement. Due first day of class.

Post a short bio on the appropriate discussion board forum in Blackboard. Tell me and your fellow classmates about yourself. Due the first day of class but will be accepted through the end of week one. See Weekly Assignments folder for instructions.

Take (and re-take if necessary) the syllabus quiz. Syllabus Quiz is due the first day of class. You may re-take this quiz as often as needed to get to 100%. This quiz does not count towards your final grade. YOU MUST MAKE 100% ON THIS QUIZ IN ORDER TO PROGRESS IN THE COURSE! All of the answers are in the Syllabus.

Send me an initial e-mail. In the email, I would like each student to provide a status on the following: do you have Office 2013 installed on your PCs, do you have your course textbook & materials, have you updated your BB e-mail account, have you taken the Syllabus Quiz and have you logged onto the MYITLAB web site. I want to know what you hope to learn from this class. Attach the MyITLab Home Diagnostic Toolkit report to the e-mail. See Weekly Procedures listed for Week 1. Be sure to use the proper Subject Line, see previous instructions on how to complete the Subject line.

Weekly Assignments Folder: Each week has a folder in Blackboard under Assignments. You are to follow the instructions listed on the Instructions Procedures document completing all assignments per the listed due dates.

Discussion Board Participation The Discussion Board had two components. You will be required to post to both. See the following sections.

Discussion Board: Discussions Some weeks the instructor will post a discussion board topic. Each student is required to make at least one meaningful (well written, thought out and relevant) contribution per topic. The student’s initial post to Discussion board is due by Wednesday, 11:55 pm Central Time of the assignment week. Points will be deducted for posting late at a rate of 25% per day. Each student is also required to read and post to a minimum of one other students Discussion Board

posting per week. A follow up post is not required for the BIO. Actively engaged students will likely make more contributions in response to those of your fellow students. New discussion board topics will be available no later than each Saturday at 11:55 PM Central Time. I post your discussion topic at the same time I open up your weekly assignments folder. In order to receive any credit, your response to another students post must be received by Saturday at 11:55 pm Central Time. I will provide feedback to your discussion board postings as necessary but I will not post grades on a weekly basis. I will post a final grade for Discussion Board at the end of the term.

Discussion Board: Current Events Some weeks the instructor will post a Current Event board topic. As assigned, you will need to find a technology-related article in a newspaper or magazine. I may give you a topic for you to research for you current event. You will post a link to the article in the discussion board forum, and then provide a short summary of the article for everyone’s benefit. The summary of the article must indicate that you have read the article and understand the content as well as the impact of the technology on society, your life, or your work. No two students may submit a summary of the same article. Post early in the week and check all previous students’ submissions before submitting your own. I will provide feedback to your current event discussion board postings as necessary but I will not post grades on a weekly basis. I will post a final grade for Discussion Board at the end of the term. Please note: I may not post Discussion Boards and Current Events each week. Complete instructions and links are in the Blackboard Weekly Assignment folders.

Training This course teaches both concepts and skills. The only way to acquire new skills is to practice, practice and practice. We use the MyITLab environment to allow you to practice using a guided format. Completing the assigned trainings is a requirement. Trainings will be listed in the Weekly Assignments Procedures List and posted to MyITLab. Do the training exercises multiple times to become proficient with the software.

Quizzes There are two types of quizzes provided: Syllabus and Sample Quizzes: I do not provide Sample Quizzes for a grade. The Syllabus Quiz is to establish a student’s comprehension of the course requirements. The Syllabus and Concepts Sample quizzes are provided so that you can test your browser set-up for Lockdown browser (LDB). LDB is required for the Concepts Exam. It is your responsibility to make sure the software is installed and operating properly before the exam times. The day of the exam is too late to find out something does not work. Take your sample quizzes early in the designated weeks to give yourself time to contact appropriate support personnel if you encounter a problem. I cannot fix many of your computer issues. However, Blackboard support and MyITLab support should be able to assist you, see the Helpful Resources link in Blackboard for contact information. Weekly Subject Quizzes: In MyITLab, the quizzes will count as part of your Homework Assignments portion.

Late Registration Students who register during the first week of the term, during late registration, will already be one week behind. Students who fall into this category are expected to catch up with all of Week #1 and Week #2's work by the end of Week #2. No exceptions, since two weeks constitutes a significant percentage of the term's lessons. Students who do not feel they can meet this deadline should not enroll in the class. If they have registered, they should see their registrar, academic adviser, GoArmyEd or Military Education officer to discuss their options. Also note that late registration may mean you do not receive your book in time to make up the work you missed in Week #1. Not having your book on the first day of class is not an excuse for late work after the deadlines in the Course Schedule.

Incomplete Grade Policy Missing any part of the Course Schedule may prevent completion of the course. If circumstances will prevent the student from completing the course by the end of the term, the student should complete a request for an incomplete grade. Note: A grade of incomplete or 'INC' is not automatically assigned to students, but rather must be requested by the student by submitting a Petition for and Work to Remove an Incomplete Grade Form. Requests for an incomplete grade must be made on or before the date of the final assignment or test of the term. The form will not be available after the last day of the term. A grade of 'INC' does not replace an 'F' and will not be awarded for excessive absences. An 'INC' will only be awarded to student presenting a valid case for the inability to complete coursework by the conclusion of the term. It is ultimately the instructor's decision to grant or deny a request for an incomplete grade, subject to the policy rules below. Policy/Rules for granting an Incomplete (INC): • An incomplete cannot be issued without a request from the student. To qualify for an incomplete, the student must: 1.) Have completed over 50% of the course material and have a documented reason for requesting incomplete (50% means all assignments/exams up to and including the midterm point, test, and/or assignments.) 2.) Be passing the course at the time of their request. • If both of the above criteria are not met an incomplete cannot be granted. • An INC is not a substitute for an 'F'. If a student has earned an 'F' by not submitting all the work or by receiving an overall 'F' average, then the 'F' stands.

Troy Email All students were required to obtain and use the TROY email address that is automatically assigned to them as TROY students. All official correspondence (including bills, statements, emails from instructors and grades, etc.) will be sent ONLY to the troy.edu (@troy.edu) address.

IS 2241

7

All students are responsible for ensuring that the correct email address is listed in Blackboard by the beginning of Week One. Email is the only way the instructor can, at least initially, communicate with you. It is your responsibility to make sure a valid email address is provided. Failure on your part to do so can result in your missing important information that could affect your grade. Your troy.edu email address is the same as your Web Express user ID following by @troy.edu. Students are responsible for the information that is sent to their TROY email account. You can get to your email account by logging onto the course and clicking 'Email Login'. You will be able to forward your TROY email to your GoArmyEd account. You must first access your TROY email account through the TROY email link found on the Web site. After you log in to your TROY email account, click on 'options' on the left hand side of the page. Then click on 'Forwarding'. This will enable you to set up the email address to which you will forward your email.

Internet Access This is an online class. Students must have access to a working computer and access to the Internet. Students can use a TROY computer lab (if available), a public library, etc., to insure they have access. NOTE: MyITLab will not work on a public library computer. MyITLab requires installation of a software package so administrative rights to the computer are imperative. 'Not having a computer' or 'computer crashes' are not acceptable excuses for late work. Have a back-up plan in place in case you have computer problems. You must use Google Chrome. Internet Explorer will not work for this course.

http://www.troy.edu/etroy/studentservices/adaptiveneeds.htm to complete the necessary procedure and forms. This should be accomplished before the beginning of class. HONESTY AND PLAGIARISM - Plagiarism is academic dishonesty and is an unacceptable activity at Troy University. Based on United States law, words and ideas are intellectual property and are protected from theft. Defining Plagiarism: Plagiarism is representing someone else's ideas or work as your own original ideas or work. Plagiarism encompasses many things, and is by far the most common manifestation of academic fraud. For example, copying a passage straight from a book, a website, or any other source into a paper without using quotation marks and explicitly citing the source is plagiarism. Additionally, paraphrasing is plagiarism where you fail to cite your original source and, in some cases, where you fail to use quotation marks as well. It is very important that students properly acknowledge all ideas, work, and even distinctive words or phrases that are not their own. (1) All of the following are considered plagiarism: • Turning in someone else's work as your own • Copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit • Failing to put a quotation in quotation marks • Giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation • Changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit

IS 2241

12

• Copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not (2) Additionally, if you download a paper from the Internet and submit it as your own work or if you submit a paper you wrote and submitted in a previous class, you have committed acts of plagiarism. Penalties: At Troy University, penalties for plagiarism include, but are not limited to, a reduction of grade on an assignment and/or a course as well as such sanctions as loss of student privileges, probation, suspension, and expulsion. These penalties for plagiarism are described in the Standards of Content section of The Oracle: The Troy University Student Handbook. (4) In this class you may receive a “F” for cheating. Guidelines to Academic Honesty: If you are unsure if an assignment is plagiarized, use the following checklist for guidance: You need to cite the specific source(s) in your work, even if: 1. You put all direct quotes in quotation marks. 2. You changed words used by the author into synonyms. 3. You completely paraphrased the ideas to which you referred. 4. Your sentence is mostly made up of your own thoughts, but contains a reference to the author's ideas. 5. You mention the author's name in the sentence. When in doubt, provide the proper citation to show that the ideas and materials are not your own. (3) Academic honesty is a cornerstone of learning and should be practiced with all academic assignments. Sources: 1.
