A Student’s View on ACCA at DBS

Tessa O’Neill ACCA Student

F7, 1st in Ireland and 7th Worldwide – June 2008 P2.2, 1st in Ireland and 11th Worldwide – December 2006 P2.3, Joint 1st in Ireland and 12th Worldwide – December 2006

What was your motivation in deciding to become an accountant? My initial reason for choosing accountancy was that I wanted an internationally recognised professional qualification. The flexibility offered by accountancy was appealing to me. I am analytical by nature and decidedly more comfortable with numbers than with words or people. However, I soon learned that an accountant must be able to deal with more than just numbers and that interpersonal and communication skills are as important as being numerate. As I progressed through my training I realised that the options available to me were much more varied than I had originally anticipated. The traditional staid image of the accountant belies the truth behind the diversity of the modern accountant's duties. Whether one chooses to work in industry or practice, to specialise or remain in general accountancy, the ever evolving environment in which the accountant works provides daily challenges. A key requirement for a successful career in accountancy is to continuously update one's skills and this is one of the aspects of the profession that I enjoy most.

What do you like to do in your free time? I am an avid sports fan, particularly athletics. I also enjoy reading - and will choose from a variety of genres dependent upon my mood.

What were your reasons for choosing DBS as your tuition provider? I choose DBS because the total package offered suited my learning style. Training to be an accountant is not only about passing exams but also about preparing for a professional career. I found that the courses offered by DBS assisted with both. Being able to approach the lecturing team whenever I had queries was of invaluable help throughout my studies.

Having studied Economics and Mathematics at Trinity College Dublin, Tessa began training within the hotel industry before joining Signature Capital Ltd in 2006. Signature Capital is a private equity company specialising in property based investments. In her role as Accountant, Tessa reports directly to the Group’s Financial Controller and is responsible for the accountancy division of the company and its Irish subsidiaries. She also works as part of the finance team to coordinate the accounting activities of Signature Capital’s international interests.

"Thank you to Dublin Business School for awarding me an educational scholarship 17 years ago. At that time, there was no such thing as golf scholarships in Ireland and DBS showed great foresight in providing me with the opportunity to continue with my studies while still being an amateur player. It is great to see that the college’s success has mirrored mine since then. The service that DBS provides in the educational area is extremely valuable and is now widely recognised as such”.
