Welcome to Berlin! We are all aware of the fact that such a high-level conference would never be possible without the help and support of sponsors. Therefore, we would like to express our sincere thanks to all our sponsors, who have not only given us their financial support but are also here to enrich our discussions. Our social highlights will give you the chance to relax: We are looking forward to our Welcome Reception at the “Schlüterhof”, where you will have the opportunity of meeting your colleagues and friends in a historic ambience. Our “Evening of the Host”, in the departure hall of the former Tempelhof Airport, will take us back to a time when transportation was an astounding experience.

Dear colleagues, Ladies and Gentlemen, On behalf of the Organizing Committee and as Chairmen of the GDV Marine & Aviation and Marine Loss Prevention Committees, we would like to extend a warm welcome to all congress participants here in Berlin. We and our team have endeavored to make the IUMI Annual Conference 2015 in Berlin a milestone in the marine insurance Industry. We are proud to be able to present a truly intercontinental conference. Representatives of marine insurance companies from all parts of the world are all joining us in Berlin. During the IUMI Conference, you will be updated on various topical issues around the marine business under the common theme of “Technical, financial & human factors – is there a new normal?”. We are certain that this conference will deepen our understanding of these issues and give us insights into the future of the marine insurance industry.

02

We are sure that this 141st IUMI Annual Conference will be an absolute highlight for all participants and hope that you will all find the exchange of ideas stimulating and that you will leave with fresh inspiration for the future. Dr. Joachim ten Eicken Organizing Committee Chairman of the GDV Marine and Aviation Committee Dr. Marcus Kremer Organizing Committee Chairman of the GDV Marine Loss Prevention Committee

INFORMATION

Welcome to Berlin! I am delighted that this year’s IUMI Conference has returned to the city on the Spree. We could almost say: “Welcome home!” – back to the city where the International Union of Marine Insurance was founded 141 years ago. What was initially a matter between a few continental European businesses has long since developed into a global organization whose importance during an age of globalization cannot be overstated. Global trade has increased many times over since the end of the Cold War and growth continues unabated. 80 percent of this trade passes on board ship over the world’s seas and oceans. And, just like trade itself, there seems to be no upper limit to the growth in the size of these vessels. Such growth – both in trade and in the vessels that support it – would be inconceivable without strong, reliable marine insurers. It is thanks to them that the risks involved in trade are calculable and acceptable. In an age when the loss of a single ship or a major fire in a port can lead to losses running into billions, this service is more important than ever.

INFORMATION

These new risks, as well as the new opportunities, that this progress has also brought about for the insurance industry are the subject of the 141st IUMI Conference. I wish you a successful and rewarding time and an enjoyable stay back in our “old home”. Dr. Alexander Erdland President of the German Insurance Association (GDV) 4

Language The official language is German. English is also widely used in the city. Safety Berlin is a safe city. However, visitors should take the usual precautions for keeping valuables hidden and being aware of their surroundings. Smoking Smoking in all enclosed public places, including hotels, restaurants and bars is prohibited by law. However, some hotels still have smoking floors. Smoking areas are available at the InterContinental hotel Berlin: Winter garden next to the “Pavillon”, on the terraces of the Marlene Bar and L.A. Cafe.

Time zone CET (UTC+1) Summer (DST), CEST (UTC+2) Germany is two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. (GMT+2). Telecommunication International direct dialling, internet and e-mail facilities are easily accessible in Germany. Most of the mobile telephone systems used around the globe operate in Germany. Local SIM Cards can be purchased at convenience stores. At the InterContinental Hotel you can find the next telephone box between “Potsdam Foyer” and “L.A. Café”.

Taxes and tipping Taxes are included on goods and services. Service and tax are included in the menu price in restaurants, bars, etc. all over Germany. It is typical to “round up” the amount to some more-or-less round figure. A rule of thumb is to add 5-10%, generally ending with a full Euro amount. Caveat: it is not typical to be given a check, then leave your money on the table. You have to tell the amount including tip you want to pay before you pay (via cash or credit card)
