WOW! FORTY YEARS!! We can’t believe 40 years have gone by since beautiful Bay Village opened its doors in December, 1975! We are going to celebrate this milestone and raise a glass to Bay Village at the annual Holiday Party on Thursday, December 10th. Join us, beginning at 4:00 p.m., in the dining room! As usual, Chef Chris and his staff have created a delectable holiday buffet menu. We have the Shelly Torman Jazz Trio providing the music again in the dining room. Since we are expecting a large group, pianist Don Bryn and vocalist Sarah Coombs will provide holiday favorites in the lobby for the folks who sit there. Dress in your holiday best and arrive ready for fun!

Peppermint Pick-Me-Up Whether in candy canes, lotion or tea, peppermint is popular this time of year. Use it to give yourself an instant pick-me-up. The scent stimulates blood flow to the brain, which increases alertness.

HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS The halls are decked and we’re ready to celebrate Christmas and the coming New Year! We’ve got lots of fun things planned! The Cantori Choir from Church of the Palms will sing for us again and are sure to get you in the holiday mood! They will perform on Friday, December 11th at 7:30 p.m., in the auditorium. Then, the adorable and talented students from the Sarasota Academy of the Arts will entertain on Thursday, December 17th at 7:30 p.m., in the auditorium! To top things off, we’ll welcome 2016 in style at our New Year’s Eve Masquerade Happy Hour from 3:00-4:30 p.m., on December 31st! Enjoy champagne and hors d’oeuvres with us and then head to dinner! If you have a mask, wear it...if you don’t, we’ll have some at the party.

Christmas season is starting early this year with the first of Advent being in November. By the time you read this, we’ll have prepared for Christmas already. On Christmas Eve, I will offer a special “Christmas Workout” in the Auditorium at 10 am. This will include segments of Strength, Balance and Posture, as well as Sit & Fit and Stretching coordinated with seasonal music. This will help you feel good and ready for the holidays. There will be refreshments served after the program. After Christmas, many will make New Year’s Resolutions. I am here to assist you to reach your personal goals in the coming year. There are a variety of classes offered at different levels. We have the wonderful new treadmills in the Wellness Center, as well as all the other fine equipment. Call me if you need help with any of the machines, or if you would like a personal program designed for you specifically. In January we are planning to walk the Ringling Bridge again one of the few “hills” around Sarasota.

3 The Village Vibes A Local Author Presents... Join us on Tuesday, December 15th, at 2:30 p.m., as we welcome local author, Emily Marie Oberle, who wrote the inspirational book, “From Outhouse to Penthouse.” It is the story of her life and she will begin her presentation by speaking about why she decided to write the book and how she accomplished that goal. The book is more than a memoir. It takes the reader through a fascinating time in American history, highlighting the world events that shaped every aspect of our lives today. The content resonates with diverse readers, both men and women, who identify with situations faced by the author throughout the book. Ms. Oberle is a retired wife, mother, nurse, educator, administrator and a lifelong learner and was recently honored as an “Amazing Suncoast Woman.” Books will be available for purchase after the presentation.

B.I.L.L. NEWS~ a Few Months of Russian History & Music! Our next DVD series from the Teaching Company is “The History of Russia,” Peter the Great to Gorbachev, on November 24th, at 7:30 p.m. Your B.I.L.L. committee has decided to break this long series into three parts. Part one begins with politics and culture on the eve of Peter the Great’s efforts to transform his country. It then looks at Peter and his reforms. Next, women’s rule is examined with particular focus on Catherine the Great. Then, the Purgachev Uprising will be covered, as well as writer Nikolai Novikov. Next, we consider Decembrist rebellion, in which nobles took arms against the state to bring about social and political reform. Part I of this series ends with discussions about different intellectuals’ visions of change. Your instructor for this course is Dr. Mark Steinberg. He is a professor of

History at the University of Illinois at Urbana -Champaign and director at the Russian and East European Center. He is the winner of a number of prestigious awards including Yale University’s Sarai Ribicoff Prize for Teaching. We hope you will make plans to join us for what should be a fascinating class! Part one will last six weeks. Following each part of this course, we will show a lecture series about two great Russian composers, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky.

Thank You, Jackie LeClaire, For the Humorous and Fascinating Presentation About Circus Life in the ’40s!

The Origin of Hanukkah An eight-day Jewish celebration, Hanukkah occurs in late November or December, beginning on the 25th day of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar. The holiday focuses on the miraculous oil that the Jews used to light the menorah in the newly reclaimed Jerusalem Temple. Although there was only enough oil to last one night, the menorah candles burned for eight nights. Families celebrate Hanukkah by preparing traditional foods and lighting the menorah, adding one candle on each night. This year, Hanukkah begins on December 7th. Bay Village will celebrate on December 8th at 2:30 pm in the Dining Room. We would like to thank the volunteers from Jewish Children & Family Services for assisting us not only with the Hanukkah celebration, but for all the Jewish services they provide for us.

The Village Vibes • Dr. Joe Griffin moved into apartment 1033 on October 20th. • Mrs. Helen Beckwith moved into apartment 333 on October 26th and will be moving to apartment 940 when it is ready in November. • Mr. & Mrs. Jack & Nancy Sneider moved into apartment 1063 on October 29th.

Chaplain’s Corner Rev. Dr. Chuck Moffett Especially at this time of year, I ask us to note the bronze plaque on the stone pillar under the portico at the Main Entrance: It reads: Bay Village of Sarasota, Inc. Dedicated to the Glory of God A non-profit ministry of Pine Shores Presbyterian Church December 1975 “For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven” Ecclesiastes 3:1 Each of us is at a different “season” in our lives. For some, this Christmas/Hanukkah season is a time of celebrating rich memories. For others, it is a season of poignant loss and emptiness. The days ahead are different for each of us. The Jewish/Christian Scriptures affirm that God is present in every season of our lives. As emblazoned on our plaque, Bay Village is grounded in a mission to offer each and every resident caring, supportive, and personal attention in every season of life. At Bay Village we see each person as a child of God. There is no distinction made based on religious affiliation, social status, gender, or any human standard. We are committed, as stated in our Mission Statement, to making sure that all of our life together is “based on Christian principles” of unconditional love, respect for all, and the inclusive grace of God Almighty in every season of life.
