A patient

we love:

Howard Gold

Howard Gold is, as he says, “a young 68.” He’s also proud to be a gay man and is very involved in the LGBT community. Originally from Dallas, Texas, Howard moved to the Bay Area 25 years ago. He was a longtime bulimic/anorexic. Familiar with the medicinal benefits of cannabis, Howard’s physician recommended it for his depression and to stimulate his appetite.

Vendor Education Month As part of our fifth year anniversary, Harborside Health Center Oakland is proud to announceVendor Education Days! Every Sunday in the month of October, several of our regular vendors will be here giving out samples of their medicine and educating patients about their products. Most of our guest vendors will be demonstrating edible medicine, as edibles are the most difficult to measure effects and potency. Please come and meet the people behind your medicine! For more info, see the Ombuds department.

Every Sunday in October, guest vendors will be demonstrating medicine and giving out samples.

Howard was skeptical at first, but his doctor said, “Why don’t you investigate? Go and ask questions, find out about strains.” Somebody suggested Harborside, where, Howard says, “They were so accommodating and answered all my questions. When I smoked pot before, you bought it off the street—and this is so different! A staff member even went with me up to the counter and helped me go through it so I understood.” In the two years Howard has been a patient at Harborside, he’s educated himself, taken numerous free classes, enjoys the smokeless efficacy of edibles, and does volunteer activism every other week. “[The staff] knows I would do anything for them, so I’m waiting for them to create more volunteer opportunities.”

JB’s product pick of the month While there are many patients who benefit from the smoked form of cannabis, there are also others who prefer to ingest their medicine. MJ4X Hemp Oil Concentrate is an extremely strong and effective, CBD-rich edible that contains approximately 54.71% THC and 5.03% CBD. MJ4X is produced by North Coast Medicinals, who claim that patients have used it to address conditions like pain relief, arthritis, migraines, nausea, cramps and chemical addictions. The look of MJ4X is that of really thick, dark hash oil. Of course, effects vary based on the individual, so start dosages small and to increase them as needed. I’ve found that the only drawback is its consistency and flavor. This medicine is very sticky, leaving a film on the inside of your mouth that can be unpleasant. Due to this, I highly recommend taking MJ4X with food, CBD-rich MJ4X Hemp or a hot drink to wash it down. Oil Concentrate

Being Well An ongoing bulletin on holistic services at Harborside

The Substance Use and Misuse Clinical Program Harborside’s free “harm reduction” clinical services assist many different patients. The program helps patients who just want information about cannabis. Participants may desire to learn harm reduction strategies to apply in their life. Some patients are seeking to use medical cannabis to help them quit or reduce the use of another drug, while others seek assistance in moderation management. And for some patients, quitting a particular substance (like tobacco or alcohol) is appealing. Bottom line—this is a medical cannabis-friendly program that attempts to support patients with substance use and misuse issues. For more information about the specific services offered, check out the white binder at the front desk. Harm Reduction Tips: Adjust the way you consume cannabis. One of the great aspects about this plant is that there are many ways to use the medicine effectively. The safest forms of cannabis consumption include ingestion, sublingual, and topical application. • Mix it up! Sometimes it just makes sense to inhale (if possible, use a vaporizer and don’t mix in tobacco), and other times it may make more sense to apply a topical directly to the area in need. Or maybe, a long-lasting edible is a wiser medication choice. • When ingesting cannabis, be sure to check the dose recommendations and the amount of cannabis or hash per dose, and consume small amounts. If necessary, work your way to more but wait two hours before gradually increasing the dose. Understand that the effects from eaten cannabis may be more pronounced. • Pay attention to your desires and needs—what form of cannabis would best meet those desires and needs? Take care to find and use the form and dose that best fits your needs.

The latest on South Bay’s Steamrollers, our recycled jar contest winner and a humble request

Andrew’s Bullhorn

A humorous meditation on all things Harborside By Andrew DeAngelo, General Manager

Harborside South in a league of their own…

Harborside goes Hollywood

When word of HHC-Oakland’s softball team made its way to San Jose, it energized the staff. We all thought it would be great to organize a team of our own—and like that, the Harborside Steamrollers was formed. We joined a Tuesday night corporate co-ed league at Twin Creeks Sports Complex in Sunnyvale.

When I found out that I was going to Los Angeles for “Weed Wars,” I was really excited. I was also a little nervous. They were asking Dress, Steve and I to represent the show to the entire American television press. And not only represent the show, represent our collective and all of our patient members. It was a big responsibility and I did not want to make mistakes.

Our first game started off a little rocky, as we allowed four runs in the top half of the first inning—but the nervousness faded quickly and we bounced back to tie the game in the bottom half. I was pleasantly surprised by the competitiveness our team showed throughout the entire game. After a long-fought battle, the final score was Team Hate 14, Harborside 10. In the second game we were on one of the “showcase” fields and held the lead for a majority of the game. But due to some odd league rules, we again fell just short of our first victory: Sandlot 12, Harborside 10.

Harborside softball team jersey.

Though we are yet to record our first win, we are all having a blast!

It’s funny to me how fast the amount of anxiety that preceded our first game has turned into anticipation each week for Tuesday night. And though we are yet to record our first win, we are all having a blast! If anyone would like to come and share the experience by cheering on the Steamrollers, contact [email protected] for game times and field information.

When I looked at the itinerary for the trip I noticed two things —one good, one bad. The good thing was Discovery was giving us VIP treatment. It’s important to make the talent happy if you’re going to parade them in front of the press. The bad thing was they wanted to pick me up at 6am to take me to the airport. I quickly got on the phone with my brother’s assistant... “Dani, can’t I get on the later flight with Steve and Dress?” She replies calmly, “No, you, Steve and Dress have to take separate flights.” This makes no sense to me until she goes on to say, “If the plane crashes they don’t want all of you to die at the same time; this way two of you will still be here to promote the show.” I take a second to absorb that then say, “These people think of everything, don’t they?”“Yeah, they are a pretty sharp outfit,” and then she hung up the phone because Steve was calling. The next day, all goes well with the town car and I survive the plane ride. When we got to the Intercontinental Hotel it was 10am but I could not go to my room because it was time to go to Braverman Productions for a tour of their offices. Braverman Productions have nice but modest offices mostly comprised of editing suites. It was fun to see little photographs of our patients and staff on the various walls acting as storyboards for the editors. Once we settled into the office of Chuck Braverman, we began to discuss how Discovery came up with the title, “Weed Wars.”

– Nick Bradley, Assistant Sales Manager, HHC San Jose Recycled Jar Contest Winner:

Andrew: Chuck, I really liked the name ‘Cannabis

Rich Romero!

Harborside registered patient Rich Romero saves all his jars from Harborside Health Center. Not only do the jars make great containers to keep things in, but Rich found his own special purpose for them. He collects leather cuffs and watches, and says that these jars make “perfect little display cases and a really cool place to keep my leather in shape when I’m not wearing them.” Next, he plans to make a wind chime mobile out of Harborside jar lids and used guitar strings.Way to go, Rich! You’ve earned a free eighth of Harborside medicine. We were delighted to hear of the various ways in which you recycle Harborside’s top-quality, signature medicine jars. Thanks to all our patients who submitted entries— including quite a few of you who use them for tea light candle-holders; Lance, who houses goldfish in them; Marissa, who stores beads and other meds; and Maureen, who keeps her jars “filled with hopes and prayers so that soon all 51 states will embrace medical [cannabis]!” And thanks to all our patients who may not have submitted entries, but who still quietly find creative re-uses for their Harborside medicine jars at home.

Confidential’ — why did they go with ‘Weed Wars’? Braverman: Bigger tent. Andrew: What do you mean bigger tent? Braverman: The title ‘Weed Wars’ will get more people into

Harborside jars as a way to keep watches and leather cuffs in shape, by Rich Romero.

Once we settled into the office of Chuck Braverman, we began to discuss how Discovery came up with the title, “Weed Wars”:

the tent to watch the show. Andrew: But we don’t call it ‘weed’ and there is no war. Braverman: I know, but the people in the tent do call it ‘weed’ and do think there is a war. Andrew: Won’t they be disappointed when they watch and

there is no ‘weed’ and there is no war? Braverman: Well, there is plenty of weed. Andrew: Yeah, but we all call it ‘cannabis’ or ‘medicine’

not ‘weed’… I mean, no one says ‘weed’ anymore. Braverman: True. But that TV show, ‘Weeds,’ uses the word ‘weed’ in their title, so the thinking is we can sort of use that word ‘weed’ as a way to use the success of that show to sort of help market our show and, if we do that right, we have a bigger tent for people to walk into.

Understand?

I pondered that for a long time before coming to the conclusion that Discovery probably does know their audience better than we do and maybe this title, “Weed Wars,” is not such a bad thing after all. (continued on page 7) Romero’s wind chime.

FAQ of the Month:

What are ‘Clean Green’ and ‘Best Practices’? Harborside Health Center always encourages responsible gardening. Irresponsible growing results in environmental damage and gives a bad name to the community, and to the movement as a whole. We respectfully request any and all providers to abide by environmentally friendly and safe growing techniques. One way we ensure ecologically sound, diligent cultivation is by inviting our growers to participate in the Clean Green Certified and Best Practices programs. Clean Green Certified (www.cleangreencert.com) is an agricultural inspection process based on the USDA National Organic Program (NOP), supporting gardening practices without the use of synthetic chemical fertilizers and sprays. Just like the NOP, the Clean Green program includes both the growers and the distributors (i.e., collectives, cooperatives and dispensaries). With the Clean Green certification program, medical cannabis patients are now able to be guaranteed the availability of cannabis that was grown, processed, handled, stored, transported, packaged, labeled and distributed using standards and procedures that comply with national guidelines for organic and sustainable farming. Harborside pays vendors $100 more per pound for Clean Green Certified medicine versus other medicine. Best Practices works much like the Clean Green program, except that it does allow for the limited use of synthetic fertilizers in a measured and responsible manner. Both programs include a detailed review of the producer’s methods and inputs. An annual, on-site inspection is included in the certification process to help ensure that the methods and inputs claimed in the records are, in fact, being used at the operation. Clean Green and Best Practices were founded by Chris Van Hook, a USDA Organic Certifier and advisor with over 40 years of experience in agriculture. As a licensed California attorney, Chris follows procedures to ensure confidentiality of information, even from law enforcement; Chris will not testify against any grower he works with. His team brings a combined total of over 70 years of experience in the agriculture and mariculture production fields, which helps assure the outlined programs are followed with the highest levels of integrity.

RETURNS NEXT ISSUE

...Andrew’s Bullhorn:

One of the most exciting developments we’ve seen at Harborside over the past year has been the rise in popularity and availability of CBD-rich medicine.

We’re all familiar with the cannibinoid compound,THC (tetrahydrocannibinol), and its medicinal effects. CBD (cannbidiol) helps relieve nausea, convulsion, inflammation and cancer cell growth, without the psychoactive effects like its counterpart, THC. This allows many THC-sensitive patients to medicate effectively and still function normally without any change to mental processes. CBDs were inadvertently bred out of cannabis during the ‘80s and ‘90s, as cultivators worked to increase THC levels in their flowers. Older cannabis users may remember the availability of pure landrace strains from Thailand. Thai ganja was one of the original “couch-lock” strains, which is a characteristic particular to CBD-rich cannabis. However, we’ll never truly know exactly how much CBD was present since cannabis laboratories in the ‘60s and ‘70s were simply pipe dreams in the mind of the user. CBD-rich Harlequin flowers

Flash forward from those lab-less days of yore to 2009, when Harborside Health Center, in conjunction with Steep Hill Laboratory, first identified a strain—Soma A+ (from legendary activist and breeder, Soma)—that was rich in CBD. This was an exciting discovery! Previously we had only seen trace amounts of CBD, 0.1% and lower in the tested medicine. However, Soma A+ tested with a whopping 6.0%. And then we uncovered more CBD-rich strains: Jamaican Lion, Harlequin, Omrita Rx and True Blueberry x OG Kush #5 arrived, impressing us with their high levels of healing potential. The True Blueberry OG holds the record for CBD at 11.0%.The others range from 5-9%. As the availability of CBD-rich strains became more prevalent (due, of course, to lab testing), we began gathering testimonials and anecdotes from our patients. We were looking to confirm the efficacy of CBD medicine for a multitude of medical conditions; we have yet to find a CBD user who hasn’t found relief.

Variety of CBD-rich medicine at Harborside.

Approximately three months after we began gathering feedback, Fred Gardner, editor of O’Shaughnessy’s (Journal of the California Research Medical Group), along with Martin Lee, well-known author of Acid Dreams, created Project CBD. Project CBD is gathering information from patients and compiling an impressive body of research that’s easy to access online at ProjectCBD.org. Scientists have become quite interested in the effects of CBD on the newly discovered endocannabinoid system. Research has shown that our brains are filled with receptor sites for cannabis. That’s right—our brains are hard-wired for cannabis. Dozens of researchers want to study the effects of CBD on everything from pain relief to cancer remediation. There are international studies that show CBD can potentially kill cancerous cells. Amazing! Unfortunately, research is being hindered by the ongoing prohibition of cannabis. That’s why, at Harborside, we continue our participation of CBD-rich promotion to our patients, gathering feedback as to the application of CBD medicine and its ability to provide relief and healing.

CBD-rich Harlequin clones.

We’ve been fortunate enough to provide our patients with CBD-rich medicine in a variety of products. We have CBD-rich flowers alongside concentrates that can reach the levels of an incredible 33% CBD! We have alcohol and veggie glycerin tinctures that are infused with the healing power of CBD flowers. And for those of you who’re interested in cultivating your own CBD medicine, we have exclusive cuts of Harlequin and Omrita Rx at both of our Oakland and San Jose locations.

Steve Speaks On...

By Stephen DeAngelo, Co-Founder and Executive Director

...Hollywood (continued from page 3)

After discussing how “Weed Wars” might make the DEA very angry and whether or not we would get busted because of it, we decided to go have a nice Italian dinner. First we went back to the hotel to medicate and had some wonderful full-melt water hash which lifted our spirits, and got us thinking about food. And after a big bowl of wonderful pasta, I was ready to hit the pillow so I could be rested for the “media training” the next morning. The town car picked us up at 11:45am and took us to the Discovery corporate offices in Century City. This was the epicenter of American media and we were soon escorted into a corner conference room that had glass walls with spectacular views. We quickly met all the executive Discovery people, and their assistants, and in many cases, assistants to the assistants—and in one case even, a “runner” to go with the assistant to the assistant. We began practicing answering questions from reporters. We talked about the structure of a question, how to control the answer to make it more effective, how to use the fewest words when making a statement. Then a camera and monitor were brought in and they put us on screen and we did some rehearsals. Afterwards, they would rewind the tape and we’d watch ourselves. This allowed them to give us pointers and allowed us to make much-needed adjustments to our delivery. The Discovery people kept saying we should expect questions like, “Are you high right now?”or “Did you bring any samples?” And also questions from more conservative folks like, “Do you realize you are going to ruin the lives of millions of children with this show?” Next, we were whisked off to the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where we had the chance to meet other cast members from other shows that Discovery and their networks were premiering for the critics. It was like a cocktail party, followed by a bunch of speeches and video clips from the upcoming shows. Ironically enough, one of the shows was about a guy named “Butter Bean” from Joplin, Missouri. He is a former wrestling champ who is now a reserve deputy sheriff in Joplin. It’s important to remember that Missouri does not have medical cannabis legalization, and our video clip was a bit of a shock to them as law enforcement people. Especially when Steve and I tried to introduce ourselves to the table of deputies sitting around Butter Bean, and then Dress came over to join the conversation, decked out in a wild purple dress with crazy pink cowboy feather hat. I believe it was then that the deputies realized they were not in Missouri anymore, that’s for sure. The next morning the car picked us up very early to go meet the critics. The Discovery people were super well-dressed and super well-organized. Steve had many changes of clothes and more than a few hats.We had to wait a while for our turn.We got to watch a monitor, which showed how others who came before us were doing. I paced around a lot and drank water constantly. The waiting is the hardest part. Once our turn arrived, we marched on the stage, the lights went out, our video clip was shown, we were introduced by a Discovery executive, and then the critics launched into their questions. No one asked if we were “high,” but someone did ask Dress why he wore a dress. And then the thing was over and we were whisked off the stage and back into the green room. Then we had a bunch of one-on-one interviews with people like Dish Network, CNN, Inside Edition—and even TMZ “stopped us on the street” and asked Steve and I what edibles were our favorite, did we bring any samples, and why Northern California cannabis is superior to Southern California cannabis. And then, we were done. It was over. No more interviews. No more critics. No more TMZ. The entire thing flew by like a puff of smoke. Then I remember a bunch of handshaking, back slapping, and people checking Twitter to see if any of the reporters tweeted about us. That’s when we decided to get back into the town car, head back to the hotel, medicate with my brother and family, and just chill out for the night. ‘Weed Wars’!

How Harborside landed a nationally televised reality show series I’m often asked if, when we launched Harborside five years ago, I ever imagined it would become as large and prominent as it is today. And I have to admit that I am not surprised — I always believed patients would overwhelmingly prefer to visit a dispensary that provides both professionalism and integrity. However, even in my wildest dreams, I never imagined that Harborside and its staff would become the stars of a major television series. But, as most of you already know, that is exactly what has happened. For the past 11 months, a Discovery Channel production team has been following me, my family, the Harborside staff, and some selected patients and

We have been filmed exactly as we are, doing what we naturally do, without any script, or any phony “reality” TV set-ups. It’s been a sometimes wonderful and sometimes very difficult process, to have virtually every aspect of our lives revealed before the camera. Our patients—and the rest of America—will soon get to see the results. Our new show, “Weed Wars,” will debut on the Discovery Channel in mid-November 2011. (continued on backpage) 7

Steve Lee

Processing Manager, Harborside San Jose My job basically consists of two major parts: quality control and breaking down of medicine. I check to ensure that our medicine is the best quality, free of all mold, bud rot or mites. I also serve as aid to all the processors, making sure the medicine is being handled hygienically and allocated to the strictest control guidelines possible. Since we pre-package all of our medicine for sale, it gives my department the opportunity to really make sure that our patients are receiving medical-grade cannabis, free of all contaminates, and with the correct amount of weight. “I started working at Harborside a little over one year ago. Mostly, I was excited to be a part of a company dedicated to really helping individuals in need. Every day at Harborside, I work to help people.”

Before I started at Harborside, I was going through the daily grind as a courier. I worked for a small engineering company where I transported different prototypes from one location to another. But I really wanted a change. I started working at Harborside a little over one year ago. Mostly, I was excited to be a part of a company

dedicated to really helping individuals in need. Every day at Harborside, I work to help people. Cannabis is an incredibly effective and powerful medicine, which can help many diverse people in a variety of ways. I believe in its importance and medical significance. Cannabis allows me to live my life, as I would like to live it: free of anxiety and chronic back pain. It gives me the ability to relax and to be completely content. One thing I’ve learned from working at Harborside is that the future is unknown. You never know what awesome surprise or tragic event is around the corner. But, you can live each moment happily and peacefully. Where will I be in the future? That I can’t say. But, whatever I’m doing, it will involve the ability to help others (hopefully here, at Harborside) and enjoying life.

(continued from page 7)

When we launched Harborside in 2006, one of our major objectives was to create a model of excellence and legitimacy, for an industry which up until then had seen far too little of either. We wanted to demonstrate that cannabis could be distributed in a way that brings benefits to communities, rather than harms. We wanted to show that patients could receive both compassion,

The “Weed Wars” show will take our powerful model into every state, every city, every town, and every household in America. and professionalism. Our model dispensary would then serve as inspiration both for other collectives, and for regulators in local and state governments. If the vision ran true,we would be able to both elevate the overall quality of cannabis dispensaries, and build greater acceptance and tolerance of cannabis among public officials. Five years later, Harborside has become the world’s most popular retailer of cannabis. I lead tours of elected officials from other cities and states through Harborside almost every week, to show them our example of professionally managed, well-regulated cannabis distribution. All over the country, new dispensaries cite Harborside as their inspiration. Our example has helped many other communities and many other collectives find their way to a win-win solution, where the rights of both patients and the overall community are respected and protected. [We] really make sure that our patients are receiving medical-grade cannabis, free of all contaminates, and with the correct amount of weight.

The “Weed Wars” show will take our powerful model into every state, every city, every town, and every household in America. The veil will finally be lifted, and the nation will be able to see what the war on cannabis looks like from our side of the battlefield. Our fellow citizens will see us as we really are, instead of being fed the same old stereotypes about slackers and criminality. I have always believed that the main challenge in winning the debate about cannabis is simply bringing the truth to the American people. I have faith in their basic decency, and in their ability to make the right decision, once the true facts are brought to their attention. Tragically, until now, just about every television show

Up until now, our side of the story has never really been told; come November, that will all change. Stay tuned for further developments.
