Welcome to Preston Muslim Girls High School Welcome from the headteacher Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, I have great pleasure in welcoming you to the Preston Muslim Girls High School prospectus. I am delighted that you have expressed an interest in finding out more about our school. Within this prospectus, we have endeavoured to give you a broad picture of what our school can offer your daughter. As you peruse through the prospectus you will find information about the background of our school, our present and our vision for the future. Discover how we enhance the day to day learning with placements, community projects and field trips. Learn about our new state of the art building and facilities. And most importantly, establish the subjects that are offered and the career prospects they will create for your daughter. The past year has marked many milestones, and has been the year of many successes for PMGHS. We were awarded the Voluntary Aided status during 2011, making our school the first of its kind in Lancashire. We also relocated to our new and vibrant building, equipped with the latest technological infrastructure, where learning has become both exciting and challenging.
In our last and one of the most challenging year, the school achieved 88% 5 A*-C grades, and an amazing 100% in English Literature; with English Language, Religious Studies & Urdu achieving 96%. This undoubtedly makes the school where the girls of our society are not only receiving the very best of education, but also within the very best of environments. The school forever endeavours to maintain, and indeed improve the quality and standards of education for all our pupils. Therefore to ensure a smooth, fearless and an anxiety-free transition from primary to secondary we have put in place an Induction day in July that will allow your daughter to come and spend a day with us and experience the PMGHS atmosphere. Additionally at the start of the academic year, the new form of year 7 pupils arrive to school earlier than the rest of the pupils so that they are given the time to settle in. Overall, I would like to say that PMGHS is strongly placed to provide a model example of education with a distinctive Islamic concept, which is harmonious with the mainstream Muslim experience within the British society. With kind regards, Mufti Javid, Headteacher
Note from head girl Everyone knows how crucial secondary school is in the development of an individual, and I think this is recognised in the school. Not only is it the fact that the teachers are always willing to help, but they always strive to nurture their students in an Islamic way. After five years at this school I can say that however, whenever and in whatever circumstances you arrive at PMGHS, the care and attention you receive, the way you are taught and the treatment you experience, ensures that the girls from this school leave as young Muslimahs with solid academic knowledge teamed with sound Islamic foundations.
4 PMGHS
The teachers in this school are all role models and we all look up to them. The students are also friendly, co-operative and reliable, with the older girls looking out for the younger ones. All in all I can say, with conviction, that PMGHS has become our home from home. From the strong positive learning atmosphere in the classroom, to the Islamic knowledge and guidance of our assemblies, this school undoubtedly has become an important part of many young lives. Hajra Saiyed, Head Girl (on behalf of pupils of PMGHS)
Aims and objectives Our aims and objectives Investing time now to yield an intellectual generation for tomorrow…
The years spent at school shape and form an individual, therefore here at PMGHS we are aware that you entrust your daughters into our care with great expectations and trust. We take that responsibility with due importance and strive to create individual young women who are rounded educationally, spiritually and emotionally.
our school by instilling a sense of personal responsibility and accountability for all that they do through the understanding and fear of Allah. We hope that they will leave our care, proud to be who they are yet fully capable of interacting with the multi-cultural society that we live in.
Individuality of every girl holds the key to their success…
At PMGHS, our students are all seen to be individuals, each with their own personality, strengths, aspirations and needs. Our aim is to take this package and nurture every girl to achieve her absolute potential. Each student’s aspirations become the goal of every member of staff within PMGHS. At the end of each student’s school life we want to take pride in what they have achieved as individuals and feel encouraged in the bright future that lies ahead of them.
Achieving much more than just education…
During the five years that your daughter will spend at PMGHS, you can be assured that she will be achieving much more than just education. From the minute our students walk through the school doors, they begin to create bonds with like-minded friends. The school encourages harmonious relationships which are translated in every aspect of the school life. This prepares your daughters’ to engage as confident members of the society. Our aim is to turn these girls into young women who can debate, reason and coheres with the wider society.
Establishing and reinforcing their identity…
In Islam, we believe that a mother’s lap is the first school for every child, and surely we are educating a group of intellectuals who will go onto being the first school for another generation to come. It is our aim to equip our girls not just with the knowledge of the world around them, but also with the understanding and appreciation of their deen (Islam). Our daily routine encompasses a reminder of their identity; from our uniform policy through to our code of conduct. Our pledge is to guide your daughters through their journey at

Why choose PMGHS PMGHS...the right choice Careers, education and guidance
Apart from the obvious, there are so many reasons why PMGHS is a good choice for your daughter. Now in its 23rd year of establishment, we are still true to the original objective of the school’s existence; to provide an outstanding educational experience guided by our Islamic ethos and values. However, we have had a long journey to get to where we are now, with many sacrifices made by former students, teachers, parents and the community as a whole.
Background
Preston Muslim Girls’ High School was founded and established in September 1989, to cater for the needs of the girls in this community. Starting off at the Old Trutex Mill, the first set of students opened the school in the shape of year 7 and 8. A close knit community was formed of around 40 – 50 young girls. Originally the school offered only the main curriculum subjects, with a much shorter school day. Facilities were minimal; however due to the enthusiasm and commitment of students and teachers, provisions were always made where there were shortfalls, resulting in a school that PMGHS is today! Based now in a brand new building in Deepdale, it is perfectly located to cater, not only for our students, but also its society. Over the years, the school has built up a reputation and is now renowned for taking a pro-active approach within the wider community. Recognising the need to educate Muslim women will remain forever a priority.
Tarbiyah Programme
The School has developed a Tarbiyah programme to develop Islamic morals and manners in all its students and staff. Various strands such as fortnightly topics, assemblies, speeches by our local Imams & guests have been introduced in a way that helps students to fulfil their roles and responsibilities in accordance with the noble ways of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
6 PMGHS
Discipline
We endeavour to promote and encourage good behaviour through a variety of means, immediate praise being one of the most effective. Our code of conduct is based on the Islamic principles of piety (Taqwa), good manners and respect of fellow beings. The school expects its pupils to behave in a responsible and respectable manner both inside and outside of the school.
Success and Achievement
Our students have demonstrated greater levels of motivation and dedication. They are fully involved in school life and after school commitment to develop a positive reaction and a sound environment.
Pastoral Structure
The Form Tutor is a key person who not only takes the attendance register, but is the first point of contact for many of the issues that affect students. Form Tutors ensure that each individual student receives full guidance and support to achieve their maximum potential. The Form Tutor’s role is particularly important, especially at times when students may be facing demands and stress in their life.

Subjects Arabic Languages are part of the cultural richness of our society and the world which we live and work in. Learning languages contributes to mutual understanding, a sense of global citizenship and personal fulfilment. Being an Islamic school, we at PMGHS wish to establish Islamic links wherever possible, enhancing the Islamic ethos and identity of our pupils. With at least one modern foreign language being a requirement of higher education, a school must decide which language it wishes to provide for its students. The availability of the Arabic language at GCSE level
meets both the educational criteria and the Islamic values which the school aims to offer, as it is the language of the Qur’aan and the Prophet S.A.W. Arabic is taught from year 7 and pupils begin the GCSE in year 10 which is examined through Edexcel Examination board. Pupils learn to converse in the Arabic language and come to understand basic written and spoken Arabic. The ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure in this country and throughout the world.
Art and Nasheed In KS3 the pupils have the opportunity to explore and extend their understanding of the exciting elements of art, which include the use of line, colour, texture, tone, value, pattern, shape, form, space and composition. The pupils are facilitated and inspired to progress further in utilising this knowledge and skill to create Islamic themed group/ individual projects. They work with traditional and new media, developing independence, confidence, creativity and imagination. Most importantly, they learn to make continuous key links with their existing knowledge of Islam. Subsequently, the pupils have the pleasure of a consecutive or occasionally combined nasheed lesson. Within these spiritual and reflective sessions, pupils engage in exploring their vocal ability and develop their understanding of the genre of nasheed. Other key aspects include; understanding basic musical concepts (e.g. rhythm, pulse and pitch), achieving healthy posture and breathing, simple notation and composition, exploring different faiths through learning about religious music traditions, and singing in foreign languages (primarily Arabic and Urdu). Furthermore, as a form of assessment and to celebrate the achievement and progress of pupils, they are coached to
10 PMGHS
perform in unison/group/independently in front of their class/ year group/key stage. In short, the subjects’ art and nasheed encompass a fun, enjoyable and spiritual scheme of work, inspiring and developing the pupils at PMGHS to become independent, reflective and competent individuals.
Subjects Business Studies The Edexcel GCSE Business Studies programme is aimed at students who might have an interest in business, and want to start their own business one day. Students with an enquiring mind and interest in learning more about the world around them, how businesses are set up, and what it is that makes someone a great entrepreneur will find the new specification exciting and innovative. The course is both active and enjoyable, and will enhance students’ communications skills as they explain their ideas through means of class discussions and presentations. During the course, students cover three units and are assessed through a written examination paper and a controlled assessment task, based on what is studied in Unit 1. The qualifications achieved will assist in preparing students to make informed decisions about further learning opportunities and career choices.
Students benefit from studying the GCSE Business Studies course, as many jobs in the future will involve working for a business. Furthermore, the course could also lead to work in a business-related profession such as accountancy, law, marketing or the leisure and tourism industry.
Business Studies is a subject which engages, enthuses and inspires me. It not only prepares me for my academic achievement, but it also equips me with lifelong skills in areas of management and commerce
Citizenship At PMGHS Citizenship is taught at Key Stage 3. Citizenship is about helping our girls learn how to become active, informed and responsible citizens. It gives students a voice: in the life of their schools, in their communities and in society at large.
The course at PMGHS develops a broad view of education for active citizenship learning, one which is not restricted to traditional classroom teaching.
We focus on:
• Knowledge and understanding of citizenship from an Islamic perspective • Developing skills of enquiry and communication • Developing skills of participation and responsible action
At Key Stage 3, Year 7 and 8 have 1 lesson of Citizenship per week in which they are given the opportunity to further develop their knowledge and understanding of both Citizenship and PSHE as well as learning a new language in order to further develop their understanding of global citizenship. Citizenship is a way of behaving, thinking, and learning which supports personal and community development and life-long learning.
PMGHS 11
Subjects English The English curriculum involves the integration of listening, speaking, reading, viewing, writing and critical thinking. It includes the cultural knowledge which enables a speaker, listener, writer, viewer or reader to recognise and use language appropriate to different social situations. For an advanced technological society, our goal is to continue to develop literacy skills which allow pupils to function and progress both in an educational context and society in general. Our aim is to raise literacy standards across the curriculum through the development and use of effective and purposeful language opportunities. The department fosters an understanding of and proficiency in, the English Language, as well as life long enjoyment of Literature. We wish to stimulate our pupil’s creativity and to enable them to become confident critics of a wide range of media, all of which is assessed through the Examination Board; AQA at Key Stage 4.
Pupils are encouraged to respect the world around them together with the people of the world and their own society. This is achieved through the judicious choice of texts and the sensitive development of issues which arise in the course of our teaching.
Geography Geography inspires pupils to become global citizens by exploring their own place in the world, their values and responsibilities to other people, to the environment and to the sustainability of the planet. At PMGHS we aim to open our students’ eyes to our world, its landscapes, and its people and to some of the important environmental issues that affect it. We introduce the colourful and informative world of maps, which we use to explore and explain the patterns and processes of the Earth’s surface. At key stage 3 we follow the QCA programme of study. At key stage 4 the girls have geography as an option where they can complete a GCSE in year 10 and 11. We follow the Edexcel Geography B examination board in which two exams are sat in year 10 and two exams in year 11, along with a fieldwork controlled assessment in year 11.

Knowledge is my companion; it is with me everywhere I go. My heart is its container and not the bookshelf. - Hadhrat Ali
Subjects History History enables the pupils to understand and appreciate how the past has shaped the modern world we live in today. They will be taken on a journey through time to visit different centuries, meet historical figures and experience various events. To give you just a little flavour they will study from as early as the Bayeux Tapestry, from Islamic inventions to how the United Nations was formed. The syllabus’ in year 7, 8 and 9 are structured to allow for a varied breadth of study of British, European and world history, which also facilitates the learning of Islamic History. The pupils will investigate, explore and analyse through the use of text books, drama, play scripts and I.C.T. At year 10 and 11 there will be an opportunity to take this subject further at G.C.S.E.
The examination board A.Q.A , has provided an engaging subject matter that is accessible to students of all levels and abilities. The pupils will study three separate units over two years, which comprises of: International Relations in the 20th century, 20th century depth studies and a Historical enquiry based on British History. This subject will certainly tickle the taste buds of all the young historians out there!
History is just that... History that ’s made great fun through role plays, designing, hotseating and other great stuff
Home Economics The aim of the Home Economics course is to provide students with knowledge and skills, which will be of value in their future lives. The students are introduced to Home Economics in year 7 where practical work is supported by theory covering aspects of healthy eating, hygiene and safety in the H.E. room. In year 8 they learn a variety of cooking and baking methods together with the functions and sources of nutrients. In year 9 they have the opportunity to develop their skills in order to become confident and capable in producing many dishes. They also undertake project work on dietary guidelines and prepare a balanced meal suited for different diets, in preparation for the option of Home Economics at GCSE.
The GCSE course, awarding body CCEA, is assessed in 3 ways;
Unit 1: A written examination worth 40% of the total marks, which will require students to apply what they have learnt throughout the course. Unit 2: A controlled assessment worth 40% of the total
marks, where students are asked to plan and make a range of dishes for a specific diet and evaluate all aspects of the task. Unit 3: A controlled assessment worth 20% of the total marks, where students have to identify issues regarding consumer awareness, plan and carry out a primary investigation and draw a suitable conclusion. From 2011 the syllabus will change and will follow the OCR GCSE Home Economics (Food and Nutrition) course.
It will be assessed in three ways;
Unit 1: A controlled assessment worth 30% of the total marks, which consists of two practical tasks and one investigative task. Unit 2: A complete food study task worth 30% of the total marks, which is chosen from a list of themes provided by OCR. Unit 3: A written examination worth 40% of the total marks, which will require students to apply what they have learnt throughout the course.
PMGHS 13
Subjects ICT The aim of the ICT department is to make students independent, confident and creative users of ICT. In KS3, all the requirements of the ICT National Curriculum is met as pupils discover how ICT is used in the world around us. They learn how ICT can be used to find, develop, analyse and present information as well as to model situations and solve problems. In KS4, students study the GSCE OCR specification. The course provides opportunities for students to develop their skills and understanding of ICT. Candidates study a range of ICT Systems, as used in the home, at school and in society. In this course, the candidates need to be aware of current and emerging technologies and the impact that advances on technology may have on themselves and others. Students study four units in total: Two units in year 10 which consists of one controlled assessment and one exam and in year 11 one controlled assessment and one exam.
Mathematics At Preston Muslim Girls’ High School, we believe that mathematics is a vital tool in everyday living. It is equally important in decision making as well as in various employment sectors including finance and accounting. Furthermore, it contributes to the school curriculum by developing pupils’ abilities to calculate, to reason, to solve problems and to handle data. As Mathematics is such an important core subject, much emphasis is put on the way it is taught.
Our aims in the Maths Department are to:
• Ensure a smooth transition for pupils between Key Stages. • Set challenging targets with high expectations for all pupils. • Offer a repertoire of approaches to teaching and learning so as to engage, motivate and involve pupils in their own learning.
14 PMGHS
• Provide extra-curricular enrichment opportunities to enhance pupils’ enjoyment of mathematics through various competitions namely the UK Maths Challenge. We follow the National Curriculum frameworks for KS3. For KS4, we follow the new GCSE Mathematics modular specifications for the Edexcel board. Students sit three separate modules which consist of a series of topics. They usually take two examinations in year 10 and the terminal paper in year 11. Their marks are added and a uniform mark is allocated at the end on which their grades are based. Our objective is to enable pupils to build a secure framework of mathematical reasoning, which they can use and apply with confidence in any spheres of their life.
Subjects PSHE PSHE helps young people embrace life’s changes, feel positive about who they are and enjoy healthy, safe, responsible and fulfilled lives. Being an Islamic school, PMGHS aims to implant good morals into the hearts of its students through the development of a strong Islamic identity. The PSHE programme has been designed to help students gain self confidence, whilst abiding by the laws of the Shariah (Islamic law), encouraging them to appreciate diversity amongst people and promoting respect and tolerance for everyone and everything. It aims to create a sense of equality and wishes to actively promote community cohesion and diversity in order to prepare role models who will contribute towards social harmony. PSHE is delivered to all year groups and its ultimate goal is to generate individuals with a strong Islamic ethos who can successfully differentiate between what is right and wrong, not only morally and ethically, but Islamically as well.
Physical Education KS3 – Compulsory P.E.
Students are required to participate in a variety of activities including Football, Basketball, Rounders, Fitness and Cricket. These activities provide an opportunity for the students to lead a healthy lifestyle. P.E. theory work is introduced in year 9 in order for them to form links with activities and create awareness of physical activity in our everyday lives. The students are encouraged to participate in games and competitions during lunch periods and after school.
KS4
We have introduced GCSE P.E. at KS4. The contents covered are 40% theory work which includes learning about healthy active lifestyles, Physiology and Anatomy. The practical assessment makes up 60% of the course. This involves being assessed in the roles of a player/participant and as an official/coach.
PMGHS!!! Five years at the school were the most incredible years, which I will never forget. PMGHS became our second home; a part of us. It was a place where we received an a huge amount of love, help, and care from both our teachers and fellow students. I would without anyhesitation recommend this school; for it is one of a kind! Parents can help by sending the correct kit/equipment with the students and to encourage them by participating in extra curriculum activities outside of the school day. Our aim is to provide opportunities for the children to learn about healthy active lifestyles which will promote a safe and healthy lifelong participation in physical activities.

Textile and Technology At PMGHS, we understand the importance of Textile & Technology as it is applied to various fields. Textile is the main component of the subject. The aim of this subject is to allow pupils to develop the dexterity skills, attention to detail and creative work. The students learn the properties of different materials and their suitability for different purposes. They then learn the basic uses of fabric and textiles. Interest in the subject is enhanced as the students learn various techniques that could be applied to fabrics such as tie-dying, appliqué, fabric painting etc. In needle work they learn various embroidery stitches such as cross stitching, daisy, satin, stem stitches.
16 PMGHS
The students start with learning the basic stitches, making button holes, stitching the buttons & basic knitting skills. The students are then involved in small projects that undertake the development of small items which are of interest to the students. In the past students have made cushions, key rings, knitted bags and they have also designed their own dresses. The learning method is based on personalized choices. This in turn equips our students with independent thinking, and encourages the development of their creative and basic handiwork skills, all of which are required in the use of textiles.
Subjects Science Science plays a part in almost everything around us, from the food that we eat to the technology behind space exploration. It makes incredible things possible. Where would we be without it? During the course we will uncover and explain aspects of science such as atomic structure, enabling you to explain
the reactions of the elements and see how this knowledge is applied in industrial processes and technology. Discover how sound is created and how this knowledge is applied in events and concerts. The subject is taught twice weekly to all classes and develops reading, writing, speaking & listening skills of the students. This is achieved through role play, book reading & studying grammar. The school follows the Edexcel board for GCSE Urdu language. Year 7 & 8 students are prepared for Urdu language starting with recognition of alphabets and phonetics as well as reading/writing. This develops the basic understanding of the language. The GCSE teaching units, as required by the board, begins in year 9 and is completed by year 11. We encourage the students to develop independent learning which leads to many students completing the GSCE Urdu in year 10. At PMGHS, Urdu is taught in settings that interest the students, corresponds to each individual’s level of maturity and also relates to other areas of the curriculum. We are proud to state that our Urdu GSCE results for the last 5 years have consistently been excellent. On average every year over 80% of the students achieve A* or an A and 18% achieve B.

Extended Schools Services
Preston Muslim Girls High School is keen to develop a range of extended schools programmes that will help raise student achievement, support families and build the local community. The extended schools programme is part of a national initiative which is aimed at raising standards for students through a range of activities. There are many extra-curricular activities that normally take place. The School works in partnership with other local schools and services to develop a variety of programmes, such as football, netball, rounders and art, beyond the school day. This service is designed to help meet the needs of its students, their families and the wider community. We consult with parents and the local community to deliver a programme that meets local needs. The school regularly informs parents and the wider community of the availability of the school facilities for future activities.

And it wasn’t just the people, but valuable lessons of life which I learned along with my curriculum. This knowledge shaped my life and has had an enormous effect on me. But there’s never a day where I don’t miss my school days.
