OLD TESTAMENT LAW, HISTORY & POETRY

18, 19, 21–23 301, 305 490–492 The Bible is divided into two sections, the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is divided into four sections: Law, History, Poetry, and Prophets. BFP: 301

1. Law The first five books of the Bible are called the Books of the Law. These books are: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. They are also called the Pentateuch. Penta means “five” and teuch means “scroll” or “book.” In the Book of Genesis, we learn how sin first came to the world and what the punishment for sin is. This first book of the Bible also gives hope, for it includes a prophecy of the coming of God’s Son, who would set people free from the Law and from the punishment for sin. In the Book of Exodus, we learn how God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses and how God led His people out of captivity through mighty miracles. God gave many other commands and rules for His people to follow. These are found in the Books of Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. BFP: 490

2. History There are twelve books of the Old Testament that tell the history of God’s people. These are: Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther. At first, God was the ruler over the people

of Israel. He ruled them through judges. But the people were rebellious and wanted to have a king instead. So God gave them kings to rule over them. The Books of History tell how the Israelites were blessed when they obeyed God and punished when they disobeyed God. The Books of Ezra and Nehemiah tell about Israel’s return from captivity. The Books of History can help your faith to grow as you read about the mighty things God’s people did when they trusted in Him. Do you remember the story of David and Goliath? Little David was able to kill the giant, Goliath, because he put his trust in God. Many stories are found in the Books of History. BFP: 305, 491

3. Poetry There are five books of Old Testament poetry: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon. These poems teach us about God’s love and how He helped His people when they called on Him. The Psalms are the best known of all the Books of Poetry. Many of these were written by King David. The shortest chapter in the Bible, Psalm 117, has a powerful message. It tells us that all people of all nations should give praise to God. Many of the psalms are filled with praises to God for the great and wonderful things He had done for His people. People often find comfort during their troubles by reading the Psalms. BFP: 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 492
