Abbreviation for Blackboard Edit Mode is in the upper-right corner of Bb and must be ON for you to modify your course content. Click the icon to turn edit on or off. The Action Link contains options to change, modify or interact. If the Action Link is not available, make sure Edit Mode is on and place your mouse next to the link or title. The Submit button saves any work or changes made on the screen. The Cancel button disregards any work and all changes made on the screen. Radio buttons. When they are blue with a black dot in the center (like “Yes” in this example), that is the option you have selected. Find and upload a file on your computer.

The arrow pointing down means to Expand. Your menu options will be displayed. The arrow to the side means Condense. Your options will be hidden when you see this arrow. Click the arrows to toggle between expanded and condensed menus. The chevrons pointing down mean Expand your tools. All of your text editor tools will be displayed after you click this button. The chevrons pointing up mean to Condense your tools. Some of your text editor tool options will be hidden when you click this button.

Signing in to Blackboard  Go to blackboard.bsu.edu  Enter your user name and password in the prompt  Click Log In *NOTE: This may look different than what you have signed into before Request your course  Click on the Bb Toolbox tab  Select courses  Select Create New Course  Select Ball State  Click the radio button next to your course title  Click Finish *Note: It may take 20 minutes to an hour for the course to load. IMPORTANT: For all of the following instructions, you will want to make sure Edit Mode is on! Make sure your course is available to your students Inside Control Panel, click  Customization  Properties  Course availability  Check Yes (or set dates if you wish)  Click Submit Turn on only the tools you want your students to use in this course  Control panel  Customization  Tools availability  Choose the tools that you want to use  Uncheck tools that you do not want to use  Click submit *Note: There can be confusion between the email tool and message tool. If you have the message tool turned on, be sure to check the Blackboard messages. They will not go to your email, so you will need to check them separately if you want to use them.

Create content  Enter the content area where you wish to add your item  Hover over Build Content until you see a drop down menu  Select what you would like to add. In most cases, you will add an “Item”  You will see the tool pictured below called the “Text Editor”  In the text editor, add anything you would like to place on the page.  Click submit

Create announcements  Locate My Announcements on your homepage  Click more announcements…  Click Create Announcement  Enter the text for your announcement  Click submit *Note: You may want to include your office hours and contact information. It is also suggested you create a welcome message (which may be text, voice, or even video!) Add your syllabus  Click on the course menu button for the area where you would like to house your syllabus. You may want to make a new area dedicated to the syllabus.  Click the Build tab  Click the Syllabus link  Create a new syllabus or Browse to upload a syllabus document from your computer

 Fill in the blanks on the page  You may choose to build out lesson shells at this point. If you do not want to organize your course this way, or have not yet decided, just skip that step.  Click Submit *Note: Add the syllabus statement from the Office of Disabled Student Development website in the Faculty Resources section under policies and procedures Creating an assignment  Enter the content area in which you would like to add your assignment.  Hover over Assessments until you see a drop down menu  Click Assignment  Enter information about the assignment and attach relevant files  Enter points possible. (This will automatically create a column for this assignment in your gradebook.  Specify the assignment’s availablity (Immediately? On a certain date?)  Continue to fill out the options you would like for this assignment  Click Submit Grading an assignment  Under Control Panel, click Grade Center  You may choose “Needs Grading” if you have not looked at the assignment submissions at all  If you have already looked at the assignment, but not graded it, click Full Grade Center to see the entire center  Scroll to the assignment you wish to view  When you hover over the cell in the grade center with the ungraded assignment (it will likely have a green exclamation point), you will see an action link.  Click the action link  Click on the attempt you wish to view  Read the submission text, record the grade, and enter any feedback  Click Submit

Viewing and using your Grade Center  Under Control Panel, click Grade Center  Click Full Grade Center to see the entire center  Create a column if you would like to manually enter grades. To do this, click Create Column and write the specifications of what you would like to have appear in the column Re-organizing your course menu buttons  When you hover over the menu buttons on the left, an arrowed cross should appear on the left side.  Drag and drop course buttons as need.  Use the arrow in the action bar to reorder.  Click the plus in the action bar to add modules.  Delete modules by selecting the drop menu and choosing delete on each button you wish to delete. Send an email to the students to tell them the course is available They like to hear from you!  Go to Control Panel  Course Tools  Send Email  Select All Users  Compose your email  Click Submit
