Greeting from Stephan Goericke Organizing Chair

Ladies and Gentlemen, As Director of the International Software Quality Institute I am glad to welcome you to the International SPICE Days 2010. First, I want to thank HansJürgen Kugler and the Program Committee for their great job in developing the conference program now already for the second year. Also I am very thankful about the support of the Stuttgart Region Economic Development Corporation for being such a good partner in organizing the Open Forum 2010 which brings together two top-level conferences under one roof – besides the International SPICE Days 2010 our partner conference „Automotive Safety & Security 2010“ – offering you the great opportunity to meet two expert communities at one venue. Located in Stuttgart, the International SPICE Days 2010 will take place in one of the most prominent high-tech capitals of Europe. Featuring Germany‘s highest density of scientific, academic and research organizations and a cutting-edge industrial profile Stuttgart seems the perfect place to me for building up networks which will foster future quality and progress. Ever since 2007 the International SPICE Days have featured a constant increase in participants – proving that iSQI has always been competent in arranging a highly interesting, cutting-edge program of great value to an international audience. This year I promise we will SPICE things up once more!

Greeting from Hans-Jürgen Kugler Conference Chair

Software is everywhere. And it certainly is in cars. Automotive software is difficult to develop and deploy, with safety and reliability requirements that rival aerospace, and with end user price expectations formed in the electronic consumer products market. Currently the news channels report frequently about “incidents” that might undermine our confidence in the “software car”. As if the current problems weren’t enough, the “software car” is rapidly becoming a powerful mobile computing platform in the internet of things. This means software now is the glue that connects services and products which used to be separate. The interconnection leads to the emergence of new properties of systems – and at the same time to an even greater increase in potential complexity. Has the complexity of the automotive systems breached the limits of what the industry can handle? What do you think? Come and hear what the keynote speakers and the presenters have to say about that – the problems and possible solutions. And practical solutions is what we need. There is no better place than the practice sessions to learn from those who had to “get things done”. There will be plenty of time for interesting exchange with those likeminded and discussion with those who have a different view. Who says learning and a arguing about processes to build technological systems cannot be fun? Come to Stuttgart and join us for the International SPICE Days! Sincerely, Hans-Jürgen Kugler KUGLER MAAG CIE GmbH

Socialize with industrial experts and leading academics! Briefly, enjoy yourself at the International SPICE Days 2010! Yours, Stephan Goericke iSQI Director & International SPICE Days Organizing Chair

Greeting from Dr. Reha Tözün

Today’s customer demands on a motor vehicle and the stringent regulatory requirements can only be achieved through electronics and software-inCARS-IT Initiative tensive systems. For the Stuttgart Region, the birthplace of the automobile, Stuttgart Region it is essential to remain at the forefront of technological progress in motorEconomic Development ing, as well as in automotive software. To overcome the increasing comCorporation plexity of these systems, we need technological and organizational innovations that break genuinely new paths of development. Given the enormity of the task, such breakthroughs are only possible through the interaction across technological and community boundaries. After a very successful event in 2009, we are happy to host the International SPICE Days in our region again. This year, we will go one step further and together we will co-organize the Open Forum 2010, where two top-level events - Automotive Safety & Security 2010 and the International SPICE Days - will take place in parallel with joint keynote sessions and a social event. Stuttgart, one of the leading high-tech regions of Europe, is surely the ideal location for the interaction of top experts and for the flourishing of ideas that break new ground. We are very excited about Open Forum and certainly looking forward to seeing you in Stuttgart in June. Sincerely, Dr. Reha Tözün CARS-IT Initiative Stuttgart Region Economic Development Corporation

Greeting from Ernst Pfister

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Member of Parliament, Minister of Economics of the State of BadenWürttemberg

I am very pleased to invite you to the new event concept “Open Forum 2010”, which will take place this year for the first time. The automotive industry is a key sector for the economic welfare and growth of our state, Baden-Württemberg. Baden-Württemberg is one of the leading global locations for mobility. Numerous investments in research, development and production by the automotive companies and the government in Baden-Württemberg clearly indicate our intention to maintain our position. The bulk of innovation in the automotive industry is in electrics and electronics. Software forms the core component of these electronic systems and is thus of great significance for Baden-Württemberg as the state is traditionally considered to be the home of the motorcar. The new concept behind the „Open Forum“ event is characterized in particular by its focus on software in close conjunction with reliability, safety and quality. The „Open Forum 2010“ has succeeded in combining events on these individual issues using a cooperative approach, thus bringing together the parties involved in conversation. With this in mind I would like to welcome you to Stuttgart and wish you an interesting and informative time at this event. Sincerely, Ernst Pfister, Member of Parliament, Minister of Economics of the State of Baden-Württemberg

SPICE Days in Stuttgart

Registration and Information Desk

Location

Baden-Württemberg is the birthplace of the car and the automotive industry. The automotive industry is traditionally a fairly focused grouping of manufacturers and suppliers. The advent of electronics and software in and around the car is changing the industry significantly.

Monday, June 21 Tuesday, June 22 Wednesday, June 23

Haus der Wirtschaft Baden-Württemberg, Willy-Bleicher-Straße 19, 70174 Stuttgart www.hausderwirtschaft.de

In times of change it is important to keep a “community spirit” of all those involved – for the benefit of the whole industry. This is the motto of the International SPICE Days strengthen the community to foster progress. Stuttgart as the capital of Baden-Württemberg is historically the right place to be for this. The Royal Württemberg Automobile Club was founded here, the oldest still functioning automotive community association. With a conference location in Stuttgart, it is only natural that the International SPICE Days should focus on the lessons learned from this industry-wide adoption and what the plans for the future are. Moving from improvement of single organizations to attempting to improve a whole value creation network is an undertaking many other industries may be able to draw benefit from.

Innovation Development and Community Sources – the Survival Strategy

Safety, performance, and productivity with C++

The Nature of Safety

The International Software Quality Institute iSQI is pleased to announce Tom DeMarco, sponsored by Method Park Software AG, the award-winning US-American software engineer and highly reputed developer of Structured Analysis, as opening keynote speaker for the Open Forum 2010.

Automotive innovation continues to be driven by software. Cars start to become mobile internet platforms. The increased connectivity together with overall safety and security considerations requires more, and more competent deployment of resources than the traditional approach of software development in the automotive industry can deliver. Community based development has proven itself in the internet domain and beyond. Can this paradigm revolutionize automotive software development in the same way? What will this mean for development processes in automotive companies? AUTOSAR is a community approach on specification level for basic software infrastructure and software integration methodology in the classical automotive domains. Artop delivers an infrastructure tool platform as a community approach. The open source software solutions commonly used in multimedia and telecommunications have to be applied also in automotive applications in order to cope with an on bord state of the art quality of service. The challenge is determined by the interconnection of the “internet and infotainment” world with the automotive classical world. The keynote will highlight that there are significant reasons for the integration of open source solutions matured by the competition of dedicated software developers.

C++ is a general-purpose language. To apply it effectively in a specialized area, such as safety-critical, real-time, embedded systems programming, requires decisions about design techniques and coding styles. This keynote briefly outlines the fundamentals of the C++ mapping of program abstractions to hardware and presents the principles of the JSF++ coding guideline used for avionics coded in C++. The key idea can be succinctly stated: Extend the language with simple libraries that provide close-to-ideal facilities for safe and efficient (domain specific) code, then simplify the language use and the verification of code by banning the use of known troublecausing features, such as arrays, pointer, casts, and macros.

More and more technical applications with embedded software are safety-critical. Many engineers who are facing the problem to implement their first safety critical product seek for methods and procedures how to do it. Most of them try to find solutions in engineering standards of these days. But are there any other sources for solutions? Didn’t also engineers learn from nature in former days?

We are surrounded by systems; modern life is all about systems. We focus ourselves every day on building and using systems.  Yet few even define the word system.  We talk around the subject (how to design systems, how to test them, how to schedule and deploy them), but almost never dress the concept in the abstract.  What are systems and why are they so difficult to wrap our minds around? Even cursory examination of the subject will oblige us to confront a frightening fact: during our lifetime, the size of systems has increased exponentially, yet the size of our only tool for dealing with them -- the human brain -- has not increased at all.  Is it any wonder that the approaches of a decade ago are no longer adequate?  In this keynote, Tom DeMarco will explore the question of building and understanding something whose complexity may well be greater than our own.

There are many samples that can be used to widen our solution frame work for safety critical applications if we search for ideas in nature: When to use redundancy? How to decide between internal versus external redundancy? What are the aspects of inherent fail safe designs patterns? While our systems become more complex by addressing more requirements and interfacing other systems, we need to check for safety issues in huge requirement sets or context of use? Are there also strategies that have been taken by the evolution of nature that we can follow?

Christian Arens, ZF Getriebe GmbH, Germany Urs Gulba, Consulting Engineer, Germany Pierre Metz, SynSpace GmbH, Germany Moving towards capability level 4 through metrics based on tool chains for ENG and SUP processes When gaining experience with implementing Capability Levels 1 and 3 for the ENG and SUP processes companies mostly strive for implementing a seamless tool chain. This in turn enables the derivation of metrics for monitoring technical progress as well as process adherence. However, in practice this strong relation between such a tool chain and process metrics is often neither clearly seen nor exploited. 1. Initially, it is reviewed how configuration item status reporting, requirements management, problem and change request survey, and project monitoring can be effectively interpreted in an integrated manner as a process improvement best practice. 2. Subsequently, it is reported by how requirements management, change request management, release management and project survey has been implemented based on Telelogic DOORS and Rational Clear Quest. Technical insights into the tool repositories and the realization of combined metrics through tool scripts are given. 3. It is then discussed how such an approach can serve as the springboard for the development towards a Level 4 capability and maturity.

From Theory to Practice - A Bridge to Safe Systems

Automotive SPICE Compliant Development Using Eclipse

The integration of requirements derived from various safety standards without excessive expense is a task for all companies dealing with safety relevant products and systems. The challenge is not to define a pretty new process, but to “improve” an already existing SPICE compliant process landscape and accurately apply it to the projects. The integration of process, project and tool requirements and the interaction of their implementation will make it easy for the user to perform all necessary steps and create the required results. The gap that is often found between the theoretical descriptions and the practical application should be kept as small as possible and provided with sturdy bridges.

Measurement-based Alignment of IT Strategies and Business Goals

A case study of developing part of an embedded system will be presented. The development process will be stepped through in the workshop and is the main focus of the workshop. The process is “executed” using various parts of the Eclipse toolset as augmented by ARTOP for AUTOSAR. During the workshop this process is subjected to continuous audit with respect to adherence to Automotive SPICE and functional safety considerations. The aim is to understand if and how

Bernhard Sechser

The tutorial will show the following steps: • analysis of the actual state (process, project, tools, gaps) • fulfilment of safety requirements (mapping, coverage, ASIL level) • criticality dependent project control (tailoring, planning, update) • target oriented analysis and development (safety methods, daily usage, user acceptance) • practical experience (reference process, customers, next steps)

Andreas Graf

• Automotive SPICE assessors have to interpret indicators differently in cases like these, and • How Eclipse and other open source tools may bring the “openness” to bear as an advantage in achieving process compliance The workshop will be run by an “expert developer” (supplier) who will continuously be challenged by an “automotive SPICE assessor” (OEM). The participants will be invited to join the discussion and help find evidence for or against certain conclusions. itemis will provide the expert developer, and KUGLER MAAG CIE will provide the competent Automotive SPICE assessor.

Jens Heidrich

In practice, the success or failure of IT and software-related strategies is often determined by management using their gut feeling, without taking into account quantitative information. If data is collected, it is often unclear how the data contributes to the organization’s higher-level goals. Addressing these issues is especially important when it comes to planning systematic process improvement activities and evaluating the success or failure of these activities. GQM+Strategies® provides mechanisms for explicitly linking measurement goals to higher-level goals, as well as to goals and strategies at the level of the entire business. This tutorial will give practical guidance on goal-oriented measurement and on how to use quantitative information about processes, products, and projects for managing the alignment of an organization’s IT strategies and business goals by means of the GQM+Strategies® approach. Furthermore, it will illustrate the approach using practical examples from industry, present related approaches, and provide practical exercises on how to actually apply the method.

Managing Software Process Improvement

Enhanced Approach of Lean / Six Sigma and Automotive SPICE™ in Process Improvement

Define, Introduce, and Validate Customized Defect Classification Schemes

SPICE Level 3 - Empowerment of a Learning Organisation & New Qualifications for Improvement Managers

Based on the SPI Manifesto (see http://www.sqs.de/aktuell_spi_manifesto_aktuell.php) and the latest research in the field a group of international experts has turned the skills definition into a syllabus, a set of training materials and examination questions (see www.ecqa.org -> Certified Professions -> ECQA Certified SPI Manager). Tomas Schweigert, Head of the ECQA certified SPI Manager Job Role Committee will give an overview on what is Process Improvement Management today.

We, Ralf Becker (Six Sigma Master Black Belt) and Bhaskar Vanamali (Principal Assessor and instructor) will discuss the different approaches. As a result we show how to reach the same or better quality with less effort under consideration of customer requirements.

In order to continuously optimize the development process and the quality assurance process, measurement is one crucial ingredient. The overall objective of measurement is to deliver relevant information for quality management needs. For example, information is needed to identify defect detection activities through which many (types of) defects slip or to identify those techniques with high defect detection potential. Defects carry a lot of information that can be measured and analyzed with respect to the improvement of the development process and the quality assurance process. Thus, the central element of a quality measurement program is a useful and easy-to-apply defect classification scheme. Even though existing schemes are successful in a specific context, it seems to be difficult to apply them in the context of other companies. This is especially true if the type of documents and defects considered differs from traditional ones.

To reach a SPICE level 3 and just offer standardised processes is not enough. A culture must be created where through team learning best practices are shared and coached across the organisation. This workshop will demonstrate some best practices of how organisations in Automotive and Telecom have successfully established learning organisations and how the standardised processes where offered and integrated into the projects using e-learning, coaching and team learning strategies.

Tomas Schweigert

The tutorial will explain SPI Management using the values and principles of the SPI Manifesto: • People • Business • Change The Tutorial will also refer to the main units of the SPI Manager Training Syllabus • Managing PI • PI Implementation • PI Involvement and commitment issues • Improvement Models The tutorial will be interactive, there will be an opportunity to work on own SPI issues.

16

www.spice-days.com

Bhaskar Vanamali

The first step will be a short introduction into the differences. The second step is a role play, developing the benefit of a multidiscplinary project approach. The third step will be the actual workshop with the following topics: 1. Main issues in the plenum 2. Different approaches developed by work groups 3. Synthesis of the different approaches resulting into one comprehensive approach 4. SixSigma and High Maturity

Michael Kläs

Damjan Ekert

This workshop is also based on selected elements of the E-Learning Manager qualification which targets change and improvement agents in companies to really implement improvement strategies using new organisational learning strategies.

This tutorial will give practical guidance on how to define, introduce, and validate a customized defect classification scheme. Furthermore, it will illustrate the approach using case studies from industry, present prominent defect classification schemes, and provide practical exercises on how to actually apply the method.
