DEAN'S MESSAGE

ANER SELA

W

hen it comes to how many different ways you use the things you buy, more may not necessarily be better. According to a new study coauthored by Dr. Aner Sela, the John I. Williams, Jr., Professor, the more the consumer uses a product in different situations, the more likely the consumer will report the product to be unsatisfactory. “The common intuition is that diversity is good, so a variety of experiences with a product should make people evaluate the product more favorably,” Dr. Sela said. “However, we show this is not necessarily true. At least in some situations, perceiving usage experiences as less – not morevaried improves post-purchase product evaluation.” In the study, “How Experience Variety Shapes Post-Purchase Product Evaluation,” which will appear in the Journal of Marketing Research, Dr. Sela and Duke University business professor

Jordan Etkin examined how experience variety influences product evaluation, customer satisfaction and the likelihood the product would be recommended by the customer. The researchers found that consumers often use the same product in the same way in multiple situations, and these situations or experiences may differ in variety. For example, with a pair of sneakers, less-varied usage experiences might include walking the dog or walking to the grocery store. However, morevaried usage experiences might include walking the dog, flying on airplanes or conducting home improvement projects. Their research found that lowervariety situations, like walking the dog and walking to the store, led the consumer to feel they were getting a lot of value from the product. Higher-variety situations, like flying on a plane, gave people a sense of less value because the product feels like it was used less often.

he road to business success for a company’s most vocal employees may lead through that company’s quietest workers. The interesting dynamic between introverted and extroverted employees was explored by Huber Hurst Professor Dr. Amir Erez in the Academy of Management Journal. The paper, “Inherently Relational: Interactions Between Peers' and Individuals' Personalities Impact Reward Giving and Appraisal of Individual Performance,” found that introverted employees are more likely to give low evaluations of job performance to extroverted co-workers, giving them a powerful role in workplaces that rely on peer-to-peer evaluation tools for awarding raises, bonuses or promotions. Erez and his coauthors, which included Warrington doctoral student Andrew Woolum, found that introverted peers “consistently evaluated

extraverted and disagreeable individuals’ performance as lower.” They concluded that introverted employees may be “more sensitive to interpersonal personality traits than their extraverted peers,” and are incorporating their negative feelings about those traits into evaluations and performance reviews. The researchers advise that extroverted individuals should be made aware that their behavior could have a negative influence on introverted coworkers, managers should limit encounters where an extrovert’s personality “may overwhelm introverts,” and that companies should consider physical alterations to the work environment to keep introverts more relaxed. The article was highlighted by numerous news publications, including Forbes, New York Magazine and The Huffington Post.

n the digital age—where most information is just a click away—are some financial forecasts incomplete? That’s what Dr. Marcus Kirk and Dr. David Reppenhagan—both Luciano Prida, Sr., Term Assistant Professors—and Dr. Jenny Tucker, J. Michael Cook Deloitte Term Associate Professor, concluded in their research published in The Accounting Review. The trio challenges the long-held belief that the consensus forecast—the expectations of analysts as a group that are summarized by the mean or median estimate—is the most important benchmark companies should use to rate performance. That’s because their research shows that individual analyst forecasts, which take into account public and private information, are not properly applied to consensus forecasts, which

include only public information. Not including this private information has an effect on how the market responds to a firm’s earnings report. Drs. Kirk, Reppenhagan and Tucker advise that firms should also use these individual forecasts in addition to consensus forecasts as benchmarks. “Despite the simplicity and efficiency of using a consensus measure in the forecast issuance setting,” the researchers write, “private information lost in the consensus aggregation process may have a first-order effect for performance evaluation in the earnings announcement setting when investors compare a firm’s earnings performance with multiple benchmarks.” The study, “Meeting Individual Analyst Expectations,” was published in November 2014.

Last fall, Warrington professor and Bank of America Eminent Scholar Dr. Mark Flannery was introduced to a new crop of finance specialists. That meeting didn’t occur in a classroom in Gainesville. It happened at the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C. For the past year, Dr. Flannery has served as the SEC’s Chief Economist, and Director of its Division of Economic and Risk Analysis (DERA). It’s been an exciting and grueling time for Dr. Flannery, who oversees more than 100 economists and leads one of the SEC’s newest divisions.

How would you describe the past year as the SEC’s Chief Economist? It’s been a whirlwind. I wanted to do this to get out of my comfort zone, which I have accomplished extremely well. My background has been in bank regulation, and this is a whole different part of the market—securities regulation— that I have had to learn about. I walked into a place where I have 140 employees, but I had never managed a lemonade stand. There are a lot of management issues. Fortunately, I have two wonderful deputies who have sheltered me from that for the most part. What were the major issues you and your staff addressed? A lot of my Division’s (the Division of Economic and Risk Analysis, or DERA) work has to do with rules—how to implement them and in what order. One rule we’ve worked on is a way for small firms to raise equity capital by streamlining the application process to solicit funds. It’s called Regulation A-Plus, part of the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act. It’s an effort to balance investor protection against the cost to small firms of raising money for investment. Another proposal is the clawback rule, by which top executives would have to pay back earnings if it turns out the firm’s accounting results need to be restated. That’s part of the Dodd-Frank (Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection) Act. We’ve also done work on securities-based

swaps—who reports trading? How does that reporting happen? We’re trying to shed light on a pretty dark market. Another thing underway is a white paper about ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds)—how they’re different from mutual funds, the systemic risks, the volatility implications, how ETFs are organized and responses to some concerns expressed in international regulatory venues. We hope to address those questions. Has it been difficult being away from the College, your colleagues and students? I miss very much riding my bike to work in shorts instead of taking the subway in a suit. I miss being around the openness of a university, and the absence of red tape. A university has red tape to be sure, but there’s much more in the federal government. Did former SEC Chief Economist Craig Lewis offer any advice before you took the post? He convinced me to take the job. Some court cases criticized the SEC—just before Craig took over—about whether the Commission had satisfied components of the Administrative Procedures Act. His work transformed the role of economics at the Commission. The Commission is doing a better job of analyzing costs and writing analyses of rules. What aspects of the job have you found surprising?

NEW FACULTY NITISH KUMAR Department: Finance, Insurance & Real Estate Previous Appointment: Ph.D. Candidate, University of Chicago Research Interests: Corporate Finance, Political Economy of Firms, Financial Intermediation.

Department: Management Previous Appointment: Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., Associate Professor of Leadership and Ethics, Columbia University Research Interests: Gender in Management, Formal Foundations of Strategy, People and Performance, Financial Institutions.

Can you touch on DERA’s rise in importance since the financial crisis? DERA has grown very rapidly because the other divisions have learned that our tools of analysis can complement theirs. We get involved with new rules from the very beginning, and we remain involved in their evolution until the Commission votes on them. We help allocate scarce examiner resources by using statistical analysis to identify the riskiest-looking brokers and investment advisers. DERA also has a large litigation support group that works with the Enforcement Division to identify and to document violations of securities laws. Finally, we are quite involved in several important international regulatory groups (specifically, the Financial Stability Board (FSB) and the International Organization of Securities Commissioners (IOSCO)), developing shared approaches to regulatory problems. What issues/initiatives will the SEC be highlighting the next 12 months? Going forward our chair wants to revise the regulation of mutual funds, and introduce new standards in judging the adequacy of their liquidity. There will also be new rules governing trading in equities and credit default swaps.

The job is relentless, in the sense that there is always something important that needs to be done. And someone is usually waiting for that something. Oh, yes, and then there are the meetings. Some days I hardly sit in my desk chair. The only frustration worth mentioning is not being able to sit quietly and think about things. That’s the biggest contrast with a professorial job. I’ve done less new research than I thought I would, even though I hadn’t expected to do very much. That has surprised me a bit. I hope to make up for it when I take home some of the ideas I’ve developed up here.

eavener Hall was made possible thanks to generosity of the College’s donors, including James W. “Bill” Heavener (BSBA ’70), whose lead gift spearheads a $35 million initiative to invest in undergraduate business education.

Heavener Hall includes nine contemporary classrooms, an open Commons for impromptu collaboration, 16 intimate study rooms, a large, multi-purpose area for events and organization meetings, academic advising space, a technology assistance center, office/meeting space for Heavener School of Business staff and a small café. Unifying these instructional spaces, student services and social areas in a single location will enhance the learning experiences of the School’s 4,000-plus students, and provide them a sense of community. Heavener Hall is the second state-of-the-art building to be constructed on the business campus in the past four years. Hough Hall, a $23 million facility that houses the College’s graduate studies, was completed in 2010. Gerson Hall, which houses the Fisher School of Accounting, was dedicated in 2004.

REASON FOR CHANGE: Broad and generic graduate business educations are becoming less viable in today’s marketplace. Employers are seeking business professionals with expertise in specialized fields.

OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT (ISOM)

CHANGES MADE: The full-time program was streamlined to five concentrations—Finance, Marketing, Real Estate, Strategy/ Management and Supply Chain Management—where the program possesses its greatest depth in coursework. Certain courses in critical areas such as Finance, Marketing and Operations were frontloaded so students could experience them sooner. The earlier exposure helps students decide on a concentration sooner and provides experience and confidence in these areas when applying for internships and full-time positions.

THE COLLEGE’S VISION OF HAVING ITS THREE SCHOOLS SUPPORTED WITH MAJOR PROGRAM ENDOWMENTS AND STATE-OF-THE-ART LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS CAME TO FRUITION IN NOVEMBER 2014 WITH THE DEDICATION OF HEAVENER HALL, THE COLLEGE’S NEW UNDERGRADUATE BUILDING.

IN RESPONSE TO THESE CHANGES, THE COLLEGE'S PROGRAMS HAVE ENHANCED THEIR COURSES TO BETTER PREPARE OUR STUDENTS FOR A CHALLENGING BUSINESS CLIMATE. IN FACT, FOUR OF OUR PROGRAMS HAVE RESTRUCTURED THEIR OFFERINGS IN THE PAST TWO YEARS TO BETTER REFLECT THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS.

“We’re simply increasing our efforts and focus in what we do best. These changes accentuate our strengths, and increase our students’ likelihood to secure exceptional full-time and internship opportunities.” DR. ALEX SEVILLA Assistant Dean & Director of UF MBA Programs

UF MBA FOR PROFESSIONALS REASON FOR CHANGE: Demand from the marketplace initiated a shift in focus, as well as UF MBA’s leadership’s commitment to provide its Online and Professional students the same opportunity to customize their experiences as our full-time students. CHANGES MADE: UF MBA’s Online Programs will offer four focus areas, allowing our students to take a deeper dive into the areas that interests them. Electives specializing in these focus areas— Entrepreneurship, Finance, International and Marketing—will be offered at designated times during the course of the program. Focus areas will be offered in the Online Two-Year program beginning in Fall 2015, and in the Online One-Year in Fall 2016. UF MBA’s Professional Two-Year Program will also offer focus areas in Fall 2015. “We’ve been working closely with our Online and Professional students to continually enhance their learning experience. These focus areas will give them the flexibility to immerse themselves in a particular area of study that can benefit their current or future career track.” DR. ALEX SEVILLA Assistant Dean & Director of UF MBA Programs

REASON FOR CHANGE: With the emergence of “Big Data” and the market’s need for talented and resourceful analysts, the ISOM program added a third track—Business Intelligence & Analytics—to its offerings. The ISOM program also offers tracks in Information Technology and Supply Chain Management. CHANGES MADE: The courses Business Intelligence and Data Mining for Business Intelligence were added providing our students an even more in-depth look at digital data and its potential on customers, products and the global economy. "These changes will provide the tools for our graduates to compete and succeed in the businesses of tomorrow where data analytics is increasingly important." D R . H A L D U N AY T U G Karl. F. and Nancy J. Flammer Professor Chair, Department of Information Systems & Operations Management

FISHER SCHOOL REASON FOR CHANGE: The Fisher School’s Curriculum Committee routinely reviews the strength of the Master of Accounting (MAcc) program, and recommended several enhancements to keep pace with the evolving accounting industry. CHANGES MADE: The School has increased faculty over the past few years allowing the introduction of more courses and adding depth to the curriculum. The School also reintroduced three tracks—tax, audit, generalist—to provide Fisher students a more focused course of study while still maintaining the flexibility they previously enjoyed. Also, the School continues to emphasize the importance of communications skills for accountants by creating Advanced Business Communications for Accountants, a two-credit modular writing and speaking course designed specifically for those in the accounting profession. “The new program provides a curriculum that prepares our graduates for accounting in the 21st Century. In addition to the 'tracks', the curriculum expands exposure to data analytics, global accounting and auditing, forensic accounting, and financial statement analysis.” DR. GARY MCGILL J. INTERNATIONAL CASE COMPETITION COMING TO HEAVENER

T

he Heavener School of Business will host the inaugural Heavener International Case Competition (HICC) on Feb. 16-20, 2016.

Tucker said the School’s leadership has wanted to host an international case competition for some time, but felt the School didn’t have the right facility to host such an event. That is no longer an issue with the completion of Heavener Hall, a 57,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art building devoted to undergraduate education. With nine spacious classrooms, including an 80-seat lecture hall, and team learning areas like the Bill Alcorn Undergraduate Student Center and the Gary Rappeport Academic Success Center, Heavener Hall has all the necessary features to stage such an important competition.

“ M A N Y U N I V E R S I T I E S O V E R T H E Y E A R S H AV E P R O V I D E D US WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO COMPETE,” SAID HORACE T U C K E R , A S S O C I A T E D I R E C T O R O F T H E H E AV E N E R S C H O O L O F B U S I N E S S . “ W E S E E T H I S A S O U R W AY O F G I V I N G B A C K .”

THE HEAVENER SCHOOL WON THREE INTERNATIONAL CASE COMPETITIONS IN THE 2014-15 ACADEMIC YEAR, AND FINISHED SECOND IN ANOTHER. THE TEAMS’ PERFORMANCES THIS PAST YEAR CONTINUES THE HEAVENER SCHOOL’S IMPRESSIVE RESULTS IN THESE RIGOROUS EVENTS, AND UNDERSCORES THE SCHOOL’S COMMITMENT TO GLOBALIZATION AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING.

The Heavener School has been competing in international case competitions the past eight years, providing students extraordinary experiential learning opportunities. While the School has actively traveled overseas for competitions, international case competitions held in the U.S. have trailed off in recent years. The hope is that HICC will become a premier and required destination for the world’s top business students.

HICC, sponsored by FedEx and Disney among others, is scheduled to be a 20-team competition with participants from North America, Europe, Asia and the Oceania region (Australia/ New Zealand). Tucker said 15 teams have already confirmed participating.

100 REASONS TO CELEBRATE

T

he entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well at the University of Florida, and the College was pleased to recognize UF’s most innovative and emerging companies during the inaugural Gator100 Awards on Feb. 6.

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA): The College’s DBA Program welcomed its inaugural cohort this past year. Fifteen seasoned executives from companies including Accenture, GE Capital Corp., Lexicon Global and Toyota, are pursuing a professional doctorate that will develop proficiency in applied research and provide candidates a broad-spectrum understanding of business topics in numerous fields.

The Gator100 recognizes the fastest-growing businesses owned or led by UF alumni. The Gator100 is presented by UF, Warrington and the College’s Center of Entrepreneurship & Innovation (CEI), and sponsored by the UF Alumni Association and Ernst & Young (EY). Fifteen of UF’s 16 colleges were represented in the Gator100, led by Warrington with 41 companies appearing on the list—including seven in the top 10. The top-ranked company was SoloHealth, an Atlantabased, health and wellness company, which had a compounded annual growth rate of 274.40 percent. SoloHealth, founded by business alumnus Bart Foster (BSBA ’97), provides self-service kiosks in more than 4,000 locations nationwide, including Walmart, Safeway and Sam’s Club among others.

2014-15 ENTREPRENEURIAL INITIATIVES Online MSE: In an effort to provide a larger audience of budding entrepreneurs with the necessary tools and knowledge to succeed, the College launched its Master of Science in Entrepreneurship (the Thomas S. Johnson Program) online. The Online MSE welcomed its first cohort in May.

Entrepreneurship in Haiti: CEI added a second international location to its Entrepreneurship & Empowerment program visiting Haiti in Spring 2015. Students work with Haitian entrepreneurs for seven weeks (six weeks online, one week in Haiti) to make their ventures sustainable. CEI visits South Africa during the summer.

Gator Hatchery: CEI debuted its student incubator this past year offering student entrepreneurs workspace, office support, mentoring and other resources necessary to launch startups faster.

Heavener Career Week: In an effort to help better connect students and employers, the Heavener School of Business held its inaugural Heavener Career Week in February 2015. The three-day event, sponsored by Norfolk Southern, hosted more than 20 information sessions from companies including Deloitte, Disney, Fisher Investments, Google, Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble, SunTrust Robinson Humphrey, Target and Wells Fargo. Topics discussed during the information sessions ranged from career paths, diversity in the workforce, interviewing and company culture. Employers were also given the opportunity to review internships and full-time job opportunities with students. Heavener Career Week was such a success that the event will be held twice in 2015-16. The Fall event takes place Sept. 28-Oct. 2, with the Spring date yet to be determined.

International Program. Dublin now joins London, Madrid, Paris and Rome as the most popular destinations for Heavener undergraduates. Heavener’s Sponsored International Programs are immersive study abroad experiences where students take UF business courses via electronic platform and at partner institutions. Students also can pursue internships in some of these locales. Dublin was added to the Heavener School’s offerings thanks to Ireland’s burgeoning economy. According to Forbes, Dublin is the European headquarters for Google, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. Forbes ranked Ireland No. 4 in its annual Best Countries for Business list in 2014. Center for Career & Leadership Development: Year One of the Heavener School’s Center for Career and Leadership Development (CCLD) was a huge success. The CCLD was created last year to integrate the resources of the School’s Academic Advising/Career Coaching office and the Career and Leadership Programs office to provide a more comprehensive and cohesive service to undergraduate business students. In the 2014-15 academic year, Heavener’s Academic Advising and Career Coaching team had more than 13,500 appointments (phone, in-person, walk-in), impacting more than 80 percent of the undergraduate population. The Career and Leadership Programs office was equally successful in engaging undergraduate students with professional development and experiential learning opportunities that enhance the Heavener experience. Almost 2,000 engagement opportunities were generated through the Career and Leadership Programs office with 87 percent of participants reporting they were satisfied or extremely satisfied with their experience. Double Gators: To maximize the College’s incredibly talented crop of undergraduate students, UF MBA instituted the “Double Gators” Program—which allows undergraduate students to be considered for deferred admission to the program. Qualified applicants will have their admission deferred for approximately two years, allowing them to gain professional work experience. Upon completion of those two years, students will have a spot reserved for them in the program. Students are eligible for both UF MBA’s Full-Time and Professional Programs.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

A STEADY

SUSAN CAMERON (BSBA ’80) Reynolds American

S

usan Cameron’s legacy as one of the nation’s most successful female business executives was already secure. It’s the reward that accompanies years of leading a Fortune 500 company to unprecedented heights. So what would motivate Cameron, enjoying a blissful retirement after a brilliant 30-year career, to return to the corporate grind?

Tobacco (BAT), which owns 42 percent of Reynolds American, to supply nearly $5 billion in financing to complete the deal. “We knew it would be challenging,” Cameron said. “Lorillard had to be willing to sell, we had to be able to buy and we needed to find an international player for the divestiture package. It took a long 10 ½ months working with the FTC, but we’re delighted with the outcome.”

Call it loyalty and unfinished business. You can also call it historic. Cameron, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Reynolds American Inc., the No. 2 tobacco company in the U.S., led the successful acquisition of Lorillard—the nation’s No. 3 cigarette producer—for about $29.3 billion. The acquisition, which officially closed on June 12, is being hailed as the largest corporate deal ever executed by a female executive. For Cameron, it was simply fulfilling her duties as a chief executive. “I’m proud of the transaction, and not because I’m a woman,” Cameron said. “We enhanced shareholder value and strengthened our company. That’s what i was brought in to do.” The possibility of acquiring Lorillard had been on Reynolds’ radar screen for years, but the company never moved forward with a defined strategy during Cameron’s first tenure as CEO — which ended with her retirement in 2011. A year later, Reynolds’ leadership began discussions with Lorillard about a potential deal. Those talks stalled, and a deal between the tobacco giants seemed unlikely. That all changed when Cameron, a regular on Forbes’ and Fortune’s “Most Powerful Women” lists, returned as Reynolds’ CEO on May 1, 2014. Two-and-a-half months later, Reynolds declared its intention to purchase Lorillard. “There were several reasons for me to get reengaged,” said Cameron, 56. “The number one reason was I felt a loyalty to the company and to its people. The second reason was that I was very enthusiastic about wanting to complete this transaction.” This wasn’t Cameron’s first time leading a merger of tobacco titans—she guided Reynolds and Brown & Williamson through a $3 billion business combination in 2004. But the complexity of the Lorillard deal would give even the most seasoned executive sleepless nights. To satisfy antitrust regulations and receive approval from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), a major facet of the deal was establishing Britain’s Imperial Tobacco Group as a legitimate competitor in the U.S. To that end, Reynolds sold three of its brands—Kool, Salem and Winston—to Imperial. Additionally, Cameron convinced British American

18

So how did Cameron secure a lucrative and complex deal in a manner of months while her predecessor struggled to get any traction with Lorillard? The formula was rather simple: Articulate a clear vision, provide Lorillard the incentive to sell and exude assurance that the deal would be executed properly. And, not to mention, keep the major stakeholders engaged and confident throughout the long process. “With so many parties involved, managing relationships is critical,” Cameron said. “We put forward an attractive financial package that incented Lorillard shareholders to want to sell the business. We secured financing from BAT and we had a plan for a seamless integration of the businesses. Managing that process constructively brought confidence to our partners that we knew how to do this, and we had the experience to get it done.” Cameron’s impeccable leadership skills were formed during her years at the University of Florida. She said she loved marketing, and endured two semesters of calculus to pursue the major. Once she was exposed to the subject’s nuances, she was captivated. “Those were such formative years—the social dynamics, the leadership lessons you learn in business school,” said Cameron (BSBA ’80). “You had to become independent, and teach yourself to be self-sufficient.” That self-determination—and an innocent phone call in 1981—sparked what would become one of the most impressive ascents by a female business executive. Cameron, then living in Louisville, was unable to find her favorite brand of cigarettes, Barclays Menthols. She called Brown & Williamson, the brand’s manufacturer and then a subsidiary of BAT, and was informed the company didn’t have a local sales representative. That phone call turned into a job offer as Brown & Williamson hired Cameron for the sales role. She was promoted to District Sales Manager two years later, and then was appointed Brand Director of BAT in London in 1990. Cameron would remain overseas for almost a decade—serving as BAT’s Director of Marketing in Hong Kong and Head of International Brands back in London—before returning to the U.S. in 1999 as Brown & Williamson’s Senior Vice President of Marketing.

Two years later, Cameron was named President and CEO of Brown & Williamson, becoming the first woman to ever lead a major tobacco company. Cameron’s decade-long tenure leading Brown & Williamson, and later Reynolds American after the 2004 merger, was a period of incredible profitability and crucial innovation. Since Cameron’s appointment as President and CEO of Reynolds American in 2004, the company’s total shareholder return is approximately 700 percent. By comparison, the S&P 500’s total return was about 140 percent during the same timeframe. Cameron has also laid the foundation for Reynolds American to move into the e-cigarette arena, which has already become a $2.5 billion industry. Reynolds’ offering, VUSE, is the No. 1-selling electronic cigarette in the convenience store channel, and is available in approximately 100,000 retail outlets nationwide. “We’ve made a commitment to reduce the harm caused by smoking,” said Cameron, a former smoker who has been especially candid about the hazards of smoking. “We’re investing in alternative products that give our consumers choices. It’s the right thing to do.” Cameron has clearly broken through the glass ceiling in her exemplary career. Many businesswomen have not, and the balance between executive leadership and the workforce is disproportionately lopsided. According to Catalyst, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding opportunities for women in business, about 5 percent of S&P companies have female CEOs while women make up 45 percent of the labor force. Cameron, however, sees progress in the near future. “The generation of men that did not grow up with women as equal counterparts is now retiring,” Cameron said. “As a result, I believe there will be more and more opportunities for women. You need diversity in the workforce to conduct business, and women are an essential part of that. I’m a big believer that when men and women are together in leadership, it produces a better outcome.” Cameron’s dedication to creating better outcomes for her alma mater is evident with her service and generosity. She’s served on UF’s Board of Trustees since 2011, and established the Susan Cameron Professorship in 2007 to support the College’s faculty, among other efforts. “UF is where i received my formative education, and i have benefitted greatly from that over time,” Cameron said. “I’m committed to students, and committed to helping UF become a top 10 research university. Real success is the ability to give back and change the lives of others. I like to do that through education.”

It wasn’t until the late 1990s and early 2000s that these other graduate opportunities evolved. It allowed us to grow our graduate programs, but also to get a better mix for the type of faculty we wanted to have.” Kraft attributes the meteoric growth of Warrington’s specialized master’s programs to two major occurrences. First, MBA programs began requiring more work experience, which meant recent graduates didn’t have the career knowledge to meet these requirements. Also, specialized master’s programs were becoming increasingly popular in Europe, which caught Kraft’s and the College’s attention.

So the College acted quickly. By 2000, Warrington implemented specialized master’s programs in Information Sciences and Operations Management, International Business and Management. The Master of Science in Finance (The William R. Hough Program), the Master of Science in Entrepreneurship (The Thomas S. Johnson Program), and the Master of Science in Real Estate (The Nathan S. Collier Program) were all created within five years. UF MBA experienced a surge as well during this time. Its Professional programs began in 1993, and UF MBA’s now world-renowned Online Program kicked off in 1999. A third full-time option—a 12-month program open to students from any undergraduate major—was implemented in 2003, and the Professional MBA in South Florida, which caters to business professionals in and around Miami, began in 2004. The College's graduate initiative was further enhanced by the transformative $30 million gift of William R. “Bill” Hough (MBA ’48), which established the Hough Graduate School of Business.

STAYI NG ON E STEP AH EAD OF TH E COMPETITION ISN ’T A LUXURY AT WARRINGTON… IT’S A NECESSITY

“That’s what the exciting part is,” Kraft said. “We’d like to have more resources because it allows us to do more. But I think the key is maximizing what you have, and also finding the areas we can exploit given our competitive advantage, which I think is considerable. We’ve been able to offer huge differentiation while also operating in a fairly low cost environment. “It’s like looking across the field and coming up with a new game plan. In our business, you’re trying to figure out strategies that don’t exist.”

THUS FAR, THE COLLEGE’S INNOVATION HAS LED TO MEANINGFUL INITIATIVES… Distance Learning: Warrington’s investment in technology and commitment to providing a quality business education to the global community has established the College as a leader in distance learning. “Technology has a big influence on what we do,” Kraft said. “It allows us to reach a wide range of students, but also fits the way people are learning. Whether it’s simulations or cases, managing the curriculum, or students working on projects—and working together in different locations—it creates more flexibility.” The College was an early adopter of distance learning, and launched its Online MBA—then known as the FlexMBA—in 1999. Since then, the College has been routinely recognized as one of the world’s best. The Financial Times ranked UF MBA’s Online Program No. 3 in the world and No. 1 in the U.S. in its “Online MBA 2015 Rankings.” Unique Offerings: When AACSB International estimated that the U.S. would have a doctoral faculty shortage of approximately 2,500 Ph.D.s by 2012, the College was one of the few schools in the world to act. In response, Warrington instituted the Post-Doctoral Bridge (PDB) Program, which prepares scholars from non-business disciplines for teaching and research careers in business schools. Since the program’s debut in 2008, 128 participants have successfully

Completion of Heavener Hall brings the College’s vision of each of its schools supported with major program endowments and stateof-the-art facilities to fruition.

THE POWER OF INNOVATION The business education landscape is evolving, and with modest financial support from the state, the College has had to continually craft innovative strategies to keep pace with the nation’s top business schools. Although it’s an unenviable position, Kraft revels in the challenge.

Alumnus Bill Heavener pledges lead gift in $35 million investment in undergraduate business education.

BUILDING FINANCIAL

STRENGTH

The College’s innovation in doctoral education continued in 2014 with the introduction of the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program—a professional doctorate that emphasizes the application of theory to actual business issues, allowing professionals to pursue careers in higher education, consulting, or a return to their field.

For years, Kraft has envisioned having state-of-the-art buildings for its undergraduate, accounting and graduate students. That vision came to fruition this past November with the dedication of Heavener Hall, the College’s new undergraduate building.

Warrington is only one of two business schools in the world to offer both the Post-Doctoral Bridge Program and the Doctor of Business Administration. Grenoble Ecole de Management (France) is the other.

While the structures are impressive, it’s what goes on inside those new walls that are of importance to Kraft.

completed the program, and gained AQ (Academically Qualified) status to instruct in business.

Advanced Resources: The College prides itself on offering students inventive academic and professional resources not provided at most business schools.

Some of those resources are…

Datastream, Reuters and a wide spectrum of real business applications provides our finance students a professional environment mirroring what they will encounter working for investment firms on Wall Street.

→  The College’s Active Learning Studio combines students’

increasing use of technology with collaborative learning—two elements that are significant to the education of today’s college students. Theater-style seating and traditional lectures have been substituted with in-depth discussions and team activities.

→  Heavener Hall’s Discovery Cube offers online behavioral tests

that aid students in discovering their personal and professional strengths, and the career fields most conducive for success.

Career & Leadership Programs: A major emphasis for the College is to instill dynamic leadership skills in our undergraduate students. This has been achieved through the establishment of innovative programs and activities involving peer-to-peer mentoring, community service and career assistance. Currently, the Heavener School of Business has 10 Career & Leadership Programs that support the personal and professional development of our students through knowledge and experiential learning opportunities.

GLOBALIZATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP ARE IMPORTANT THEMES THAT PERMEATE THROUGHOUT THE COLLEGE, AND ARE ENTHUSIASTICALLY CHAMPIONED BY KRAFT. THESE INITIATIVES PROVIDE A REAL-WORLD DEPTH AND PERSPECTIVE TO THE COLLEGE’S CURRICULUM

W

e can’t get away from our core disciplines like marketing, finance and management,” Kraft said. “But there are synergies between globalization

and entrepreneurship, and the discipline areas. They are very

important to us.”

Although globalization is stressed in the College’s academic offerings—notably the Master of International Business program—its true value is seen in Warrington’s study abroad opportunities. Warrington’s study tours and exchange programs provide international experiences of varying depths to give our students a firsthand glimpse of global business practices.

“The world is changing, and the best way to acquaint students is to put them overseas, whether it’s for two weeks, a semester or a year,” Kraft said. “Many of them are going to wind up working for companies that aren’t headquartered in the U.S. They’re probably going to be doing business, sourcing or seeking finance overseas. We’re aware of that, so we need to provide them an influential experience.”

The College’s entrepreneurial initiatives have increased exponentially led by the Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation (CEI). Courses in high-tech entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, venture finance, and innovation and sustainability, are now mainstays. The Center also engages in entrepreneurial activities that assist U.S. veterans starting their own businesses, teach entrepreneurship principles to faculty around the world, or provide funding for promising start-ups through a business plan competition.
