QUESTION & ANSWERS What is the reason for End of Sale of Cisco Catalyst 6500 non-E chassis? The replacement Cisco Catalyst E series Chassis offers enhanced power scalability for supporting maximum number of PoE ports per chassis. Compared with Catalyst non-E 6503 chassis, the new -E Series chassis offers enhancements to support the 67XX series line cards. My customer has non-E chassis and can they mix both E and non-E in their network? Yes. My customer has not yet made the transition to Sup720. What is their upgrade path? The high speed fan tray required to support Sup720 will not be end-of-sale. The spare version will continue to be orderable thus giving the option to migrate/transition to newer technology for non-E series chassis customer base Does my customer need to move to a new software release when they migrate to the E-Series chassis? No. The E series chassis is backward compatible with the software releases of the non-E series chassis, so the migration will be software transparent. What about Smartnet contract for the non-E chassis? The last day to extend or renew a service contract for the Non E chassis will be till February 01, 2011. Replacement for any faulty hardware after November 01, 2007 will be provided with a like or better chassis. What software support will be available on the non E chassis? Software support will be provided for non-E chassis and E chassis only on active software trains (CatOS and IOS) till 01 November 2012. New features such as higher capacity power supplies or line cards may be available only on the E series chassis. Smartnet support will continue to be provided for non-E chassis past the end of sale date.
