1 Wi-Fi is happening The Wireless Broadband Market Place • Home WLAN – research group Ovum forecasts that the number of networked homes world-wide will mushroom to 121 million by 2008 • In June BT launched ‘Fusion’ the world’s first converged fixed and mobile phone service with seamless handover. It uses Bluetooth technology to connect the BT Fusion handset to the broadband line. This hub also works as a wireless (Wi-Fi) router allowing customers to hook up PCs, games consoles and printers wirelessly around the home • Wireless devices most likely to be used by over two thirds by this sample are laptop PC’s (94%), mobile phones (84%) and PDA/Handheld computers (72%). (source: Reed Business Insight Research) • 83% of workers believe wireless and mobile working creates a competitive advantage; 93% believe it allows them to improve customer service (source: The Economist Intelligence Unit) • ‘E-mail, contact address book & calendar’ (86%) and ‘web access’ (67%) are the most frequently mentioned reasons for use of wireless technology. The most popular reasons for introducing wireless technology are ‘flexible/remote working’ (83%) and ‘increase staff productivity’ (63%). (source: Reed Business Insight Research)

• In the UK, business travelers waste up to 689,000 hours a month waiting in airports. 73% admitted the importance of being instantly contactable during working hours has increased over the past two years (source: David Lewis Consultancy research) • Corporate travelers take 280 million business trips each year. It is estimated that 80 percent use VPN technology (source: Gartner) • 87% of business travelers place high levels of importance on the availability of Wi-Fi Internet connection during their visit to a hotel. (source: Jupiter research) • Over three quarters of organisations claim they will invest more in wireless technology in the future (78%). (source: Reed Business Insight Research) • Over 14 million people will be working flexibly by 2013 (source: DTI) • The number of hotspots is set to increase to almost 120,000 by 2006 (source: Cisco) • 71% of European Enterprises plan to have wireless networks by 2007 (source: Datamonitor) • There will be 20 million users of public Wi-Fi services across Europe by 2006 (source: Gartner)

BT Payphone kiosks

Wireless Broadband Alliance

These installations offer radius coverage of approximately 50-100 metres. This enables BT Openzone to be accessed from a number public areas where people can ‘work on the pause’ from public seating areas, cafes and restaurants (e.g. Covent Garden, Finsbury Pavement, Oxford Street, Charing Cross, Public library in Islington, etc).

As a founding member of the global Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), BT Openzone’s priority is to deliver roaming interconnections with the other WBA members.

The BT Openzone hotspot installations within BT Payphone kiosks tactically enable wireless internet access to reach nearby venues, such as coffee shop chains and as well as independent cafes, restaurants and bars.

This means we can provide a more consistent user experience for BT Openzone users when they are roaming in WBA partner countries. In most cases this experience is initially based on the universal access method via web log on. We are already working with the WBA members to move toward supporting client based roaming. Currently BT Mobile Office customers will need to use the web based access method whilst roaming.

11 Marketing Initiatives Why not here? Campaign BT and Intel have underlined their commitment to wireless technology by launching a dedicated marketing campaign to educate and drive usage of BT Openzone and Intel® Centrino™ mobile technology. The ‘Why not here?’ campaign is planned to run until the end of December 2005 and will range from a presence at events to online promotions and high street marketing. The main objective of the campaign is to raise awareness of wireless working to business travellers and educate them about the benefits of BT Openzone and Intel Centrino mobile technology.

Online Marketing BT Openzone partner extranet A secure portal accessible via ‘Partner zone’ on the public web site (www.btopenzone.com), this has been developed as a central repository for partner news and relevant sales, marketing and event resources. It’s designed to provide added value to all partners. Following a trial period to garner feedback, we’ve now refined content and functionality (including the ability to order BT Openzone in-a-Box and hire event kits) and will be communicating with partners via BT Account Managers and/or BT Openzone partner newsletters to let them know how to register for access. Hotspot site redesign Work to improve the BT Openzone hotspot site interface continues. We’ll be making it easier for all our customers to log in and get going with BT Openzone. This will include the addition of a drop-down list for customers to select their service operator. The refreshed hotspot site will be designed using the latest BT brand guidelines – ensuring it looks part of the BT ‘family’ and reassuring customers with the BT brand values. All content will also be updated, ensuring the latest available information is communicated. This redesign applies to the different versions seen at BT Openzone native hotspot sites, as well as The Cloud hotspots, BA Lounge hotspots and when using BT Openzone in the Republic of Ireland. Implementation will now occur in Quarter 3.

Elements of the campaign will include: • Airport promotions for business travellers taking place in Heathrow (Terminal 1), Stanstead, Gatwick (North Terminal) and Luton Airports from the 12th of September • Wales Rally 15th-19th September • Trade shows such as World Travel Market 14th-17th November For a full list of events visit http://www.btopenzone.com/news/calendar.jsp
