15 random adverts ‘crunched’ in Teachit’s Cruncher KS3 > Media and non-fiction > Advertising

How it works

Students are given a variety of adverts – mainly for holiday destinations. The ads’ texts have been re-organised into alphabetical order by word, using Teachit’s Cruncher, so that they now look like interesting nonsense. Students can now re-make sense of them.

Try this!

Most of these texts are holiday advertisements. Try using a variety of texts – instruction, advice, persuasion, newspaper report, etc. Ask the students to label each jumbled text by its type and explain their decisions. It’s easy to crunch your own texts if you are a Teachit.works member: simply copy and paste – or type – any text into Cruncher and ask it to ‘process’. The results are particularly useful for teaching at word level. When we study non-fiction with students we very often explore sentence variety and how different sentences are used for different effects. We also – at whole text level – explore layout. But single-word analysis can get overlooked. Cruncher allows you to remove a text’s syntax so that students are confronted by the vocabulary in its raw, disorganised state. This helps students to spot – for example – the density of abstract nouns in holiday ads (e.g. excitement, tranquillity, beauty) and other lexical patternings.

Or this!

To take this investigation one step further, take the results of crunched texts and put them into another ‘whizzy thing’ – Magnet. Say ‘no’ to ‘random tile colours’ and select ‘create tiles’. At the very bottom of the new screen you will find a palette. If you click on one of the word tiles and then on a colour, the tile will turn that colour. Get students to colour-code words into different categories: e.g. abstract nouns, concrete nouns, factual adjectives, unverifiable adjectives (such as ‘breathtaking’) and so on. Better still, invite students to decide their own categories.

Or this!

Have different groups of students working on different crunched texts and get them to present their findings to the rest of the class. Each group could even work on three examples of the same genre. What do they discover about the typical lexical choices (vocabulary) of that genre? Richard Durant
